Wind blew my door open and now its bent

I was getting out of the car in a parking lot yesterday and parked far away like I usually do. As soon as I pulled the door handle the wind pulled the door out of my hand and swung it open with full force. Once I got out of the car and went to close it; it wouldnt close. I noticed the door was down from its normal position about a centimetre. I put my hands under the door and lifted a bit and then went to close it and it latched. Still not at the level I'd like it to be but whatever. I went on with my day and when I came back to the car, got in and went to close it it was back down where it was.

It did the same thing today too...

What can I do to get the door to go back where it was? Inside the hinge there are no visible signs of being bent but clearly the hinge is bent in some way.

Car is well out of warranty and I dont really want to spend an arm and a lego on fixing it.

I thought I could open the door and place a jack with something between the pad and the door and jack it up a bit... Are there better solutions than this? Dont really want to live with this and dont want to mess up my door anymore than it is...

sucks, but check your insurance policy. I doubt a random wind gust will qualify as an act of god - pretty sure most companies have those pretty spelled out.

Quotes from body shops are normally free, I would at least take it to them and ask. Does it look like you bent the hinge(s)?

May be as simple as taking the door off and re-aligning it.

You insurance covers you when the wind blows down a tree into which you crash; this would be no different.

Also, generally speaking, they cannot legally raise your rates for an incident that was not your fault. They can evenutally drop you if you become a nuissance, but this should not raise your rates.

My car is going in for a rear spring install on Thursday. I'll leave it until then and see if the shop knows what to do (they're a body shop too)

Sounds like the door panel that the hinges bolt too on the body are bent. The hinges are super thick and the sheet metal they are bolted to will bend before the hinge itself.
Could be costly depending of insurance covers it or not

I would just be worried that by doing a quick fix it weakens the metal even more.
I'm in no way a body guy, but the ones I've seen will have stress fractures and though everything may be peachy at first, 200 door closes later and the metal fatigues and cracks

Shit man! While I was waiting for my first claim to be settled I had some 17 year old girl in her dad's lifted Avalance back into me! Bad things happen in 3, next accident my car gets in will be a write off... even if it's only a fender bender, i'll drive it off a cliff, don't ever want to have to deal with insurance after my last 9 month long fiasco.

OP, time to upgrade to CF hood and s-line bumper.
Go through your insurance for the for the delivery van damage and work a deal with the same body shop for the door.

Good luck with the shop, the beauty of a good body shop is they'll try their best to get the car looking even nice than before it was hit. They'll probably roll the bent door into it all as well. Mini update

Insurance gave me a Chevy Traverse to drive its ridiculously large.

Appraiser hasn't showed up yet but whatever. I'll wait until they do. For now they're paying for my rental so it's their problem.

So far we did a quick price out of just the replacement parts on the outside; we didn't pry the hood open. We're waiting for the appraiser for that. Looks like minimum 4k for just the parts; doesn't include paint, labour or anything else that's busted up inside like possibly the rad support, rad, condenser etc.

Hopefully appraiser shows up tomorrow and we can begin ordering parts

Make sure you don't have any kind of $$ or days limit on it, mine was 1500$ worth of rental when i was having my work done, assholes didn't let me know when it hit that mark and wanted 380$ bucks when i turned in the car.

I got my insurance adjuster to fix that up and send the other party the bill.

Btw I got a brand new beige Chevy Malibu, which I immediately traded after 2 days of driving it, and had an Altima w/ CVT
