Snow tires at the drag strip

Planning to hit the drag strip for the first time ever, in a week or so. I currently have winter tires on the car, even though winter is pretty much over. Will they slow me down in the 1/4 mile compared to summer performance tires? Will the summers hook up better at launch in the spring temperatures?

Have fun with crap numbers and when your tires blow out on you.

    Do you plan on launching?

Launching = don't use your snow tires

Not launch = who cares, you're not going to trap more than 100-110 and your power level won't cause you to lose traction with quattro. Just don't hot-lap 10 times and heat them up and ruin them.

    Have fun!

So, I am guessing you are saying ditch the snows? I have a set of summer tires but they are on heavy 20 inch wheels (245/30/20). Guess Ill go with those then.

Thanks for the tips. And yeah, I am going to launch the hell out of the car :) I just have to figure out what rpm to minimize wheel spin

In some cases wheel spin is good. You want to spin just enough so you don't bog hardcore lol.

Can't borrow some 17's from someone? Even 17's with all-seasons will be fine.

Hmmmmmm.... I have set of Avus 17s on the S6 (on winters though), and a set of 17 all season tires in the backyard. Would be a bit of work to get the all seasons on the rims. Maybe ill search kijiji for a cheap set of wheels with some worn out summer tires.

some spin is definitely better than stick and snap an axle, then get stranded...

I guess I'm unfamiliar with the ability to "launch". In our platform. Is this like brake torquing? Is there something special to this? I also will be hitting the track for some baseline stock 1/4 mile times prior to going into modifications.

depends on the person the particular technique, some its a clutch dump and others slip the clutch a bit. regardless typically it means leaving from a stop at raised engine speed

Snow tires at the drag strip

Oh haha I was thinking of the launch ability in like a Lamborghini where they just mat both gas and brake pedals and just release the brake and a launch program initiates internally from the ECU to maintain traction and rpm's

yeah, definitely dont want to get stranded 1.5 hours drive from home. What rpm did you launch at when that happened? Do you think it was from repeated launches, or just one BAD one that with too sticky tires?

Re: Snow tires at the drag strip

uneven surface probably did it, it was at about 4.5k-5k. on smooth pavement it'd typically light up all 4 for a couple of feet and then hook (at that point it'd be time for 2nd lol). That was with the 255 hankook RS3s which measure out more like a 275 and are quite sticky. I have a picture of some torn up pavement/rubber from the 2011 umass car show somewhere, that was more typical.

snow tires=soft compound = great grip , some people use winter tires as cheap track tires they only issue they run into is premature ware due to the compound being so soft and termac temps being higher (above 10deg c) the tire just dissapears

ps what track you plan on going toronto motor sports ? when is their opener

Thanks for the tip. Im going to do that. May switch to the 17 inch winters I have on the S6. The 19 inch winters are kind of expensive tires to burn up.

Apparently, people are meeting at Petro Canada at Burloak/QEW to fuel up and chitchat before cruising down at 10am.

You can do this if you have an Auto. Mash Brake, floor it, wait until the stall speed is reached, and then let up on the brake.

Just to add to this, i raced a ton more when I had my mustangs. People don't just go buy snow tires for the track. Since the compound is soft, they buy old warn out snow tires, and have them shaved into slicks only leaving a tiny bit of tread from the snow tire left. Regular full tread snow tires will just get ruined and won't hook well. But then again, OP doesn't want to snap an axel lol.

Snow tires at the drag strip

I was wondering if we had something like this in the tip. But seems like every time I hit the gas to fast after I let off the brake I get serious lag in the pedal, like it limps to speed, but no limp mode ad fine right after. I do this at stop lights and right after I let off and gas it, it turns into a dog until I let off and hit the gas again.

If you're TIP, i wouldn't try launching. Just mat it when the light turns green.

Just say no to snow tires at the drag strip. In addition to being a waste of time, it will hose up the first 60ft for everyone else who is actually trying to launch. If you are going to go and just record trap speeds..go for it...other than that..wait for some good tires...

Ive got those 18" avus wheels, but might b a bit small on tires. There in classifieds tires are 225, 40 18 i think. Or ive got the stockers off the A4 17" aswell, and the stockers off the AR 17" and i think thats all i got.

I used rock hard winter tires on my A4 when I ran it, Spun the tires to about 30mph and then they caught and I shifted at about 40mph.. In my case any more traction than that was just detrimental and caused bog or way to much wheelspin(I brought summer tires as backup).

Well, I am thinking Ill give the snows a shot. The temperature looks like it is going to be somewhere between about 5 and 10 degrees celcius when I am going. So, I am thinking the softer snow tire compound would be better at that temp anyway (as some of you guys have suggested)
