Hey does anyone know if it is at all possible to change the thermostat housing cover on my S4 without pulling the timing belt?

I've done it before, I used a zip tie to keep the belt on the cam pulley and pulled it partially off so I could pull the housing.

If you're that far in.... it takes like an extra 5 minutes to do it right by popping off the cam pulleys and such......

Make sure you take this opportunity to upgrade to the proper OEM metal unit. They will never distort or have issues in the future, and your exact reason is why we always recommend them.

We carry them in stock, they are $145.

also, make sure that thermostat o-ring is in good shape. I've had a few aftermarket brand t-stat O-rings fail. Only the genuine audi one has ever not failed on me. I don't know why.

I pulled the belt off the passenger side cam gear... but I had a cam lock bar to put it all back together. Putting the belt back on was a bitch.

I don't have the bar where the car is, it just seemed like there was some space. I
will try to nudge the belt forward a bit.
Not pulling the belt a 2nd time would make the change a snap. Doin it this morning.
Will let you know my findings.

You can do it, I did it maybe 2 months ago.

Takes a little bit of finagaling to get it out over the crest of the Thermostat, but it is very possible.

I put a metal one back in, I'd suggest doing the same. Solved my leaking problems.

Yep your right did it today. You need to loosen the metal surround around PS Cam sprocket to give youa lil more room but with a twist of the belt and screwdriver or a friend.... Your in.
Took lil over an hour start to finish. Sure beats pulling the belt...

You know I threw in a new Stat and o-ring in there!

I have a silly question from an S4 noob... When you did this did you have the car in service position? Do you have to have it in service position to do the timing belt? I think my t-stat is stuck partially open since on cool mornings it doesn't really get up to operating temp on the gauge for quite some time. The needle swings from one notch about cold to normal and back down but never over normal.
