'01 Audi A4 Quattro, Torque Converter removal... any tricks or advice?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I need to replace my torque converter as my trans oil pump locked up and chipped of the locking notches in the converter. I noticed the type of hex bolts holding it to the flex plate, what is necessary to get them out? would I be dropping the oil pan to get to them? the tranny is off to the side as I just finished rebuilding it.... BURNT!
so... any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Just let me know what you can tell me. thanks!

No, you can get it off even with the trans in place, it's just a royal bitch. There's an access hole on the bottom of the bell housing. You need to use a big flathead screwdriver to move the flywheel and hold it in place as you lever against the bolts.

One thing you HAVE to know though. When you re-install the trans, be careful as you're mating the trans and engine. If you look at the splined shaft coming out of the transmission you'll see that it has a stepped portion to it. You CANNOT let the TC slide forward when you go to install the trans. What will happen is that it will catch on that lip and as you force the two together you'll hear a 'click' and it will go together just fine. That 'click' is the front pump housing snapping, and then you're out a new transmission.

what kind of bolt is it? just a regular allen or is it a triple square? get the right bit and have a buddy pry against the flywheel as you break the bolts., then turn the gear as zimbu mentioned. if you have an impact and an impact swivel, you could just use them. i dont know if there is enough clearence for using a swivel, but i imagine there would be

So you have the trans out? Remove starter (if its not out already), access to the converter bolts is through the starter hole. 12pt socket on the crank bolt to turn the flex plate or pry on ring gear to position flex plate. M10 or M12 triple square bit (cant remember which) on a 1/2" impact with 3" extension and swivel.

Torque converter should be installed into the trans and trans+converter into car. Bad things happen otherwise.

^This. No need to mess with the oil pan.

I thought my TC bolts were T40 or T50 torx, but it's been a while. They aren't regular hex bolts or allen bolts, though.

Its possible that they are torx, I cant remember if it was the 2.7t's 3.2's or 1.8t's that have the triple square. Ive done a few and cant remember for the life of me lol.

I looked it up and although they look the right size and thread pitch the heads on mine are hex and the ones with that part number take a star bit. Must had been a change in later models or it was replaced before on the car.

If you already have some, why not reuse them? I don’t believe they are stretch bolts. The manual says to torque them to a specific number but no + 90 degrees. For the 2001, it has a torx head. I’m sure you can use either or.

The more I think about it maybe I should consider the cost of converting to a manual. I could do the work just have to see if I can find a deal on parts. I have a couple Pick N Pulls in my area so probably when they have their next sale on parts. Usually on holidays. Or sometimes I see people selling whole cars for pretty cheap because of a blown engine or accident.

It's a bit easier to find the A4 parts as they were more common. The B5 Passat 4Mo with manual was pretty rare, so I had to use a driveshaft spacer with the 6sp manual from an S4. I did have a donor car for the 1.8T swap and all of the wiring. It really livened up the car.
