    Avant H&R spring question

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I know H&R has a specific kit for avants, 1.2" lowering all around (29061-2). However the sedan sport spring has 1.5" all around, in theory can you install the sedan sport spring (50361) on an avant to get it lower?

Update, according to H&R the avant springs are longer and stiffer than sedan to make up for the weight difference.

yeah, I wouldn't recommend it. you'll probably get weird sag issues.

It has been done, but as you noted from H&R, there is a difference to make up for the weight. If you put sedan springs on the Avant, you will probably drop almost 1/4 inch more.

Do yourself a favor and buy some coilovers.
The H&R springs will give you reverse rake and kill the quality of your ride.
    Ask me how I know.

I have had coil overs on numerous past cars and in the end I am not sure I want that ride comfort, or lack thereof at this point in my life. I want no wheel gap and a comfortable ride, is there a such a thing? lol

Yeah that is the german site, the US site doesn't even list those springs. They have one set for the avant.

Not sure what coilovers you've had in the past but that's your best option if you want a lowered/comfortable ride.

JIC, TEIN and PSS9s. Also had tein lowering springs on an e46 m3 and they were money as far as looks and ride went.

H&R street comfortable enough? Any firsthand experience with them?

i would go with H&R sports or even more of a compromise is H&R OE's
the sports will give you a 1-2 finger gap while keeping your car's ride quality somewhat in tact. The OE's will be closest to the factory ride quality but a larger wheel gap.

also look at Vogtland coilovers. I had them on my b7 s4 and the ride quality was better than the oem s4 suspension..

Only option for the avant from H&R is the avant sport springs, I have sport package on my avant already so its lower than stock.

@audirings4 how would springs compromise ride comfort if your just lowering your ride?

If anything, it should be a slight improvement

You do understand that the stock struts/shock are meant to work with the OEM springs.
When you swap out aftermarket springs with shorter coils and a more aggressive spring rate
your suspension will be stiff (not sporty). Very uncomfortable for a daily driver.

Coilovers on the other hand are designed so the spring/shock combo work hand in hand.

True...I did some pretty intense research before going for the H&R Avant Sport springs and you really do not want to go any lower (especially on the Avant) if you're still using the OEM shocks... My drop was actually just around one inch after the car settled. If you really want to go lower I'd suggest to just go H&R coil-overs if your budget can handle it. You believe you would be quite happy with the drop and handling as I was.

When you put it like that.....

I'm looking into lowering my car and was looking into H&R springs but seeing as it is my daily driver it sounds as if I should cough up the cash for coils

Here are some not so great pics of my Sport Pack Avant right after the H&R Avants were installed. Sorry I don't have measurements but it definitely lowered the wagon a bit more than .8" (or whatever 20MM less would be in inches) from Sport height.

The ride height is dead level, but of course the higher front wheel arch gives the perception of rake, which it is truly not. Only CO's will fix that on our B8 Avants.

Overall height and comfort were just fine for the price IMO.

I am on 19"s now, click the link in my sig for pics.

I can ASAP, will measure next time i am parked on perfectly flat ground. Keep in mind I am on 19's now with 255s, rather than the stock Sport 18"s on 245s.

Exactly what I am looking for, I am stock sport package with 19's and 255's so your measurements will give me the exact drop to expect from these springs.
