Swapped 1.8T into B5 S4 chassis, need ABS advice

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I had a blown B5 S4, so I picked up a trashed, but complete B5 A4 cheap and swapped in a 1.8T. The car starts up fine, idles, drives, etc... (can't rev past 1600 rpm yet, need a TB alignment.)

First things first, here is the VAG-COM scan:

I need to take care of the ABS situation. The car currently has the complete braking system from the S4, with a 1.8T ecu from the A4. The brakes DO work, but I haven't been above 20mph yet.

I'm seeing the blinking ESP/BRAKE lights in the cluster.

    My questions:

    1. Can I recode the currently installed B5 S4 ABS module to work with the 1.8T ECU? Or do I need to swap the electronic section of the module from the A4?

    2. Do the ABS valve section and the attached ABS control module have different part numbers? I can only see a P/N on the valve section on the module from each car, and they do not match...

    3. If I swapped just the electronic section of the ABS module from the A4, would I be able to retain ESP like I had with the S4?

    Thanks for the help.

Any reasons why you just didn't find another S4 power plant instead of going to all this trouble to create a frankenmonster that only you - as its unfortunate creator - can love?

Actually, I'm not hating. I'm just curious.

Perhaps you got the 1.8 for next to nothing and cost was the main factor?

Given your skills, you probably understand that the resale of this car becomes quite a bit more complicated given what you're doing. But if you are keeping the car forever, then that doesn't matter, I suppose.

I have the feeling that you may not get a lot of support in regards to the swap, as I doubt many here have embarked on this kind of project and your situation most likely has not been encountered before by most here. Or, even, by anyone other than yourself (I can't imagine that this kind of swap is very common).

    Regardless, good luck with it.

    That wasn't directed towards you.

yeah the entire car was dirt cheap, plus after selling parts I didn't need, and whet i'll get for scrap, my swap was basically free. (aside from go-fast parts)

Yeah i'm keeping the car "forever". No use in getting rid of a car that owes me nothing, plus i'm haviong a lot of fun with it and learning a shit-load. The car is clean, chassis components are solid. I've been booed for this swap since the day I started it, but who cares? It's my car.

Sure this car was an A4 at the start - BUT I wouldn't throw it out of bed.....I'm sure everyone would still be drooling over it if it was still the VR6 swap - but they decided that a 4 cylinder was better.

It runs circles around my S4 - not just because it's faster - it is - but because it has far better weight distribution and handles so much better because of that.

If my S4 engine looses the turbos again - I'll follow this guys path and build up a 400+ whp 4 cylinder........

At least the OP has the balls to do something he wants - and doesn't deserve to catch all this shit because of it.

Id be making sure you are getting good power to those sensors.
Not sure how you went about the swap, but would be fuse 34.

I'm assuming the donor car is an 01 since its an 018 CH ECU which is ME7.5 and the engine code is an 06A AWM. These don't have ESP so I don't think you can retain that unless there's a way to recode it but I've never seen it done (might be possible). With that being said I'd swap over the ABS module (since you already have it from the donor and hopefully it's in good working condition and that should take care of that) and don't worry about ESP.

If you want real help without the hassle post in the A4 section, there's tons of help there.

01.5 a4's have ESP. I have it on my car.

When he recodes his ecu he should be able to code it for ESP.

The amount of hate from some members in this section is incredible. I could have picked a B5 S4 up if I wanted (and still can), so I'm not exactly seeing how having a B5 S4 warrants the cockiness and arrogance.

I don't care what motor he throws into his car, but I don't see why he doesn't ask in the a4 forum since that is the engine he has. Yes there are knowledgeable members here that do tons of swaps but this is rare where it is more common in the a4 forum.

And usually the other way around which is replacing four banger with something bigger. I don't see how receptive B5 A4 forum would be if the OP swapped Yugo or Trabant (google it) motor into a b5 a4...

You probabally also need to swap over your cluster. As those are tapped into the ecu and if they don't communicate well car won't run properly. Search the b5 a4 forum for more info this forum doesn't ever attempt those kind of swaps...

Maybe because it's an S4 and he's seeing if any other S4 drivers have done this to their S4 in the S4 forums.....S4. Also, would you ask Jetta VR6 drivers how to swap their motor into our cars....lay the fuck off the guy, if you're aren't going to help then you should be the one to "gtfo".

Thanks, thats what i'm getting at. I'm not terribly worried about ESP, but the ABS code is preventing me from going any further.

When he decodes his ecu he should be able to code it for ESP.
I can't remember if the donor car has ESP...

Its more of a what do you have done to your car than mods. This way when I post about some problem with misfire or rough idle no one asks do you have bkr7e's because everyone knows if you post about a misfire it'll be a response somewhere in it.

    No you don't.

smh at the goon "build it our way or youre a tool" phags in this forum, take the cookie cutter bullshit to the mk4 forums. Apparently some b5 s4 owners have turned the corner from once seeing how far you could push the limits of a chassis and drivetrain to the land of douche and conformity. Purpose built vehicles have lost their way in a sea of "slammed" "stanced" and generally horrific shit builds. High five for using a little bit of creativity on a seemingly played out canvas
