18058 code gone. fuel pump fuse keeps blowing

driving for 5 miles last week at 60mph and the car just shut off, get towed home, ran vag com and get 18058 code

    18058 - Powertrain Data Bus
    P1650 - 35-00 - Missing Message from Instrument Cluster

checked my fuses and realized the fuel pump fuse was blown, put in another 20a fuse in and that blew less than 5 minutes later, then another fuse and 2 minutes later that blew.So I unplugged my ecu for about 30 minutes and checked the connectors underneath it just like MDJ did in this http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...ighlight=18058

my same plug was a little loose but not completely out like his was. now I do not get the 18058 code after driving 1 mile in my neighborhood and letting it idle for 30 minutes without the fuse blowing so I went out driving and after 4 miles the fuse blew again, so I threw in a 25a fuse and made it home 2 miles later, total of 6 miles. I do not have any fault codes at the moment, is this a sign of my fuel pump going bad? my previous car was a b5 1.8t with a 3071 kit and when that pump went out it just died, no fuse games. so do i have an electrical short with the pump or is it just going bad? any other advice? TIA.

fuel filter is getting changed tomorrow also.

Sometimes when necessary for diagnosing a bad fuel pump I use a scope to see what kind of amperage it is using.

I suppose you could do that in this instance.

There is also a fuel pump relay...I think under the driver side kick panel...3rd one over facing the back of the car. Anyway, that may be bad and blowing the fuse? Sounds more like pump itself since it blows when you drive. Unplug pump at the tank and see what she does(obviously won't run).

Stop putting higher amperage fuses in. Good way to cause a fire. Unhook the fuel pump and check the resistance in the wire between the fusebox and the pump. Then, power and ground (@ the pump). If the wiring's good, replace the pump.
