    Hyper Silver wheel paint

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
About a year ago I was looking for a source of Hyper Silver paint to refinish my wheels. Clicky click. I ended up repairing my wheels by just scuffing them up and respraying them with a catalyzed Urethane clear-coat. When I posted the thread there appeared to be an interest in a Hyper Silver source for a weekend DIY. I recently stumbled across this Clicky click so I thought I would post it in case anyone was still interested. I have no idea how "Hyper" the Silver is but I have to assume that it is brighter then the Duplicolor "Bright Silver".

    Cheers!

I'm really curious to see how "Hyper" it comes out. If you try it be sure to post up some pics.

Old Guy, these are two 11oz rattle cans correct? Would one box be enough to do one whole wheel?

Did you ever look into Wurth silver wheel paint when you were shopping before?

I think one kit would do at least two wheels. Yes I considered the Wurth Silver but it is really more of a match for the OEM silver similar to the wheels on my CC. The aftermarket wheels on my A4 are a lot brighter and I like that it "pops" more with the OEM Light Silver Metallic body color than the Wurth. Consequently I ruled out the Wurths or Einszett silver wheel paint.

idk where exactly you can go to get it but for me a local parts store mixes paint and puts it in rattle can clear and all, usually last 2 1/2 -3 years depending on prep job and road condition. they bring out a machine to match the color of your car or you can get anything mix out of their book. 15$ for a dupicolor size large can big enough to do all 4 wheels. worth asking around in your parts or the country too

I tried to get some Hyper Silver from the same place I got the paint for my lowers. Since I have a spray gun I don't need it put into a rattle can. Unfortunately the shop only had a Bright Silver. Nothing that I would consider "Hyper" Silver. That's why I am really curious as to how the Duplicolor turns out.

    Hyper Silver wheel paint

I might they this as well. I have already bought Wurth silver but I didn't order enough and it seems this is cheaper. I'm not sure what I'm going to do just yet.

Anyway, is there any tips on spraying clear coat from a rattle can? I've never sprayed a clear coat before.

It's no different than spraying color coats. Spray the first coat on lightly to give the subsequent coats something to bite. Follow up with several medium to heavy coats watching out for sags and runs.

I wonder if they make a Matte clear coat yet. The regular clear coat kills the "bling" of the hyper silver in my experience.

I know its an old post, but if you have a hvlp gun etc, then why not get metal flake and some paint tint and mix your own hyper silver?

I posted a question about painting hyper silver on a body shop forum and this is what a guy said:

I've done about 10 sets of wheels in this finish. The product is made by PPG. It's called 'Chrome Shadow' and the part number is: 452-86973.

You start by priming and painting the wheels in 2K Direct Gloss. I reduce it 3:1:1 and you have to use Fast hardener. I also generally use fast reducer as well unless it's really hot. After you do you 2-3 coats, you need to low bake the wheels for 30 minutes @ 60 degrees celcius.

Within one hour of the bake process conculding, you then need to take a 1.0mm touch up gravity fed spray gun, and fill it with well stirred (did I say, well-stirred!) Chrome Shadow. You set the pressure at about 40psi at the regulator, and you then mist the Chrome Shadow on. The critical step here is to mist the coats on LIGHTLY! If you put it on too heavy, it will fry the 2K up to which there is absolutely NO recovery but to start from scratch (ie. new 2K). If you do fewer coats (approx. 3-4), you will get a black chrome finish, but if you put more coats on (about 7-8 coats),you get the Hyper Silver like in the pic.

You could do a matt or satin clearcoat, but I have only ever seen, and used a full gloss clear. After you spray your 2-3 coats of clear, you need to low bake the wheels again for the time prescribed by your clearcoat's TDS. You then need to wait a minimum of 1 week before attempting to fit tyres. You need to wait longer than normal because you have double the amount of product on the wheels.

I must stress how important booth and painter hygeine is when using this product. Because, if you get any dirt/crap in any part of the job, it will show up in the finished job. And you can't wetsand out the dirt/crap from the 2K or the Chrome Shadow. What you paint is what you get. I'm serious.

And, for you DIY'ers, because the Chrome Shadow product must be applied over baked but still fresh 2K, sorry, but you cannot apply this product if you don't have/use a low bake booth.
I'm not sure if this guy is talking about the same exact thing we are...I always heard that Hyper Silver was painted with a black base coat and then silver sprayed on top of it.

Interested in seeing the results of this.

thats what i would do, seems that that gives it a better base to start from, and probably makes the silver pop a little more. but i am no paint expert.

    Hyper Silver wheel paint

Might give it more depth. You'll have to do more coats though to get enough brightness out of the silver I would think. But I too am not a paint guy.

I think it would be possible to do 4 wheels with 2 kits. I'm gonna be using 3 since I painted the center caps and messed up in one

Of course. Only started on one wheel since I was unsure how it would turn out. It looks so much better in person. My iPhone camera just isn't good enough. I purchased two more kits to finish the other 3. I just hope they don't get scratched to shit when I get tires mounted

That pic looks really good but as you stated nothing is the same as looking at something in person. In your opinion is the paint really "hyper" compared to the OEM 17" 5-spoke wheel or is it more of a match to the OEM color?

    All finished

Thanks old guy. IMHO, I don't think it really hyper but very close. It pops way more than my oem wheels. I'd suggest powder coating for a real hyper silver finish but I am very satisfied with these results. I would recommend this product if you want don't want to PC.
