    Colorado Emissions Testing

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I need to pass emissions by the end of the month.

Im not too concerned about the actual emissions part, I think that should be fine even though I have piggys, frankenturbos, and big injectors. Plenty of people pass with that or more.

Im a little concerned about the visual inspection.

They say they do a visual check on the SAI. I deleted mine. HTF do they even know where to look? Our engine bays are so cramped they couldnt possibly know every engine bay. Readiness should be "OK" since I have an S4 ECU file. Also, S4s have no SAI, but allroads do, possible negotiation point try to "say" I replaced the engine with a 2001/2002 S4 engine and it doesnt have it.

Lights on the dashboard. I have traction control, abs, level control and CEL lights on. I guess you can pass with CEL and codes, they will just print out what you have for your own reference. But if you have too many dash lights they wont pass you. Air ride, traction control, and abs are all related. Its saying theres a short to ground/open circuit when i pull codes. None of these are related the the physical functionality or emissions of the car. I could say its just a popped fuse, short to ground. I think its just part of the ECU issues Im having. Or just come up with some BS excuse that the ABS module is dieing or its an air level sensor causing all the lights. Or pull the cluster, take it apart and electrical tape over the lights?! ahhah

So, I was planning on going in tomorrow. Is it even worth it for me to try, or will I fail miserably? I dont really want to waste my money if Im guaranteed to fail.

In NY they hook up a computer to the OBD port. Engine light=instant fail. More than 1 monitor not ready=instant fail. I don't know how CO works, but I would think they would at least hook up an OBD scanner.

    Why is your CEL on?

MAF is not plugged in, ECU is coded for wrong MAF type(technically, it just says the voltage is too low). Also, misfires.

Actually, wrong answer. CEL is on because 2.7T

From the air care colorado site
Effective April 1, 2003, an illuminated "check engine" light is no longer a mandatory pass/fail component of the emissions testing process. If the "check engine" light is illuminated, it is noted on the vehicle inspection report each motorist receives at the end of the emissions testing procedure. However, it is an informational tool for the motorist, rather than a reason for failure.

I might bolt the SAI pump back on(but not actually plug it in or do anything with combi valves) tomorrow morning so it looks like I have it for the visual inspection.

    Emissions testing is stupid.

On my A4 they hooked up, rolled it for 30 seconds and it passed. On my LS1 swapped 944 they put me through the wringer and looked for and traced every single line

They probably noticed it clearly was not a Porsche engine in the 944 which is why the scrutinized it. Hoping they are mellow on the allroad. Going in to try my luck at 9am

Put you belly pan on for starters.

They will want/need everything plugged in, so that means that you should hook up your MAF, then just cut the wires further down, an put conduit around it so nobody can tell.

Any PCV, or vacuum hoses or anything that isnt hooked up, run them to a place where they cannot be seen.

They might fail you for a cone filter. I passed with mine, but my buddy failed because of his (stupid). Also, if you just have a baby cone filter on your PCV instead of it going into the air box, fail. So rout it away)

They are going to want to see your cat's, if you cant see them from the engine bay (stock), that's good. And then they like to use mirrors to look under it, but probably wont go as far as to get on their knees.

Other than that, you have the tailpipe sniffer test on an AWD dyno (they might run your wheels into the side of it like they did mine and refuse to pay!), and then they test to see that your gas cap holds pressure.

    GOOD LUCK!

I can code you SAI out for you. It'll come up as UNSUPPORTED. I can also fix your MAF problem.

^looks like the best option to me.

I assumed you had the MAF tuned out already.

It's coded out, it failed visual inspection. I just bolted the pump back on and made the hoses look like they go somewhere. Time to try again.

but then why are you getting a check engine code about it?

but buttoning everything up to pass visual should get you through.

Now hopefully they will get rid of emissions testing in the next 2 years like they are taking about so I don't have to do this again.

Who is talking about that?! I would be very happy. I had to pay some shady shop to pass my diesel truck ;-) And it will only be getting worse as I keep pushing for more and more HP!

Nothing in that article said they'd be getting rid of the emissions program. They've extended the exemption for new cars from 5 years to 7 years. That doesn't help any of us.

    Right here:
The state audit argues, for example, that adopting an exemption for model-year 2001 and newer vehicles would be both cost-effective and still maintain the bulk of the benefit the program provides.

I have a new car so I haven't had to mess with this in a long time. But now my daughter has a used car, can't you just drive by the mobile testers twice and then avoid all of this hassle?

Wth, it would have helped me! lol 2008-2013=5years. Damn and I got it done last year, so I shouldnt have had to? It was out of state if that matters.

They mention that they're thinking about it, that's a far cry from implementing it. If the car has already been registered and smogged, then yes, you can drive by the mobile vans and as long as you meet those standards, you won't have to bring your car in. When they mail you the registration renewal card it'll either say you need to come in or not.

Exactly what I was thinking. To get plates, etc. for the car you need to have passed emissions & inspection at a station when bought/transferred in to the state. I plan on driving past multiple sniffer-vans when mine comes due next year.

How could one go about registering their car in a county that doesn't do testing?? I guess I would have to know someone with an address in that county??

Try getting a P.O. Box in one of those counties I think. I'm holding off for some sort of miracle to end this bullshit Envirocare. I would be willing to bet if that takes place all of a sudden exhaust shops are going to be busy as hell making DP's for all of us.

Yeah I looked into it. Also, it cost just as much as doing the stupid test. I think I should pass just fine.I'm going tomorrow afternoon. I do have a cone filter, but other than that its all stock. I have a check engine light as well, but I don't think it's anything to do with the emissions side of it. Lastly, no credit cards??? And it's $40?

    Its $25 cash or check.
You should be fine passing though. I have a cone filter they didnt say a damn thing about it. If your engine is more or less stock you should pass with flying colors. I passed the emissions with the above numbers(well below the limits), my car has piggy pipes, no SAI, frankenturbos, 550cc injectors, stg3 tune, and hybrid blow off valves. Still has the main cats, but as you can see i didnt have any issues with the actual emissions part. just make sure the car is nice and totally warmed up before taking it in.

They don't care about cone filters and the like, there isn't a visual inspection beyond making sure your car has the emissions stuff it should have (O2 sensors, cats, SAI, etc).

Piggy pipes will easily pass all the emissions, you don't need the pre cats...
