Should I buy this car with a blown engine?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have a opportunity to buy my first Audi. It is a 2009 A4 quattro with the 3.2 v6. Has 112K miles and the engine needs replaced. It is in very good condition despite the high miles. I found an engine for around $4,000 usd. What would be a good price to pay for the car in the current condition? What is it worth after I replace the engine? I do not know the market for these cars that well and am hoping you guys can give me some insight. Also another question how difficult is it to replace the engine in this vehicle? I have done many engine swaps but never on an Audi. Thanks!

What is the price on the car itself? Hard to tell if your desire is to see yourself in the car or to fix it and flip it.

I think $6000 would buy it. I thought about fixing it and driving it for a while before I would sell it.

For $6000, you can't go wrong. That is definitely a good deal, I'd do it. How many miles does the replacement engine have?

I personally think this would be far more trouble than its worth. It would be safer to find a B8 2.0 or B7 3.2 with. The B8 3.2 is kind of rare and since it was only sold in 2009 (I think), I assume finding replacement parts will be difficult and costly. I'm not sure about engine pricing, or the vehicles value after the swap but those kinds of questions immediately trigger red flags in my mind . At 112K miles its a bit of a gamble in my opinion, but thats not to say I wouldn't mind seeing this happen haha. I don't know if anyone on here has swapped either B8 engine before. Just my 2 cents, but hopefully someone else can add better insight. Good luck.

The replacement engine has 11K miles and comes with a year warranty. I only can find 3 engines for it online. I've done plenty of engine swaps on modern vehicles and never had an issue but this one idk about haha. Im sure being a quattro wont help either taking it apart. It just really caught my eye at only $6000. One owner, clean title, never been wrecked..

If you can somehow put in the 2.0 instead of the 3.2, do it. I had the 3.2 in my old 2008 A5 and I fucking hated it.

3.2s are worth more though, rarer, (and faster), all things that benefit OP if he decides to sell. Honestly, I doubt the motor swap would hurt the resale, especially since it only has 12K on it.

considering 09 3.2s are going for $23k+ on Cars.com, seems like a great deal since you'd be spending ~10k.

Recall the other day somebody had a 3.2 engine available here.
With 112K miles - a lot IMO - how does the suspension look?
    Might be worth the gamble.
Nothing wrong with the '09 only 3.2, just very few mods available, she does pull in M-mode

It was Guruman who posted an available 3.2 on the 19th.
I've messaged both Guruman and Porter. See if we can weave these two threaders together.

if you can get it for $6k, you cannot go wrong! the engine replacement is a normal, regular engine swap, nothing special about the audi's. to be honest, if I could get one of this with clean title and record, and bad engine, I would do it right now without even thinking. there is no way to go wrong... even if you don't want to drop another 4k for an engine, just part it out, and you most likely will be able to get back at least $10k. if you want to sell it, then probably you should look into 2.0T as they are easier to find, and should be cheaper. If you looking to fix it and keep it for yourself, I would strongly recommend the 3.0T (S4 engine) or the 4.2 (2009-2012 S5 engine). If you just want to keep the car as it supposed to be, drop in a 3.2 and you have a whole A4 B8 with a V6 for $10k, which is a killer deal.

For this price you won't go wrong.Be sure you take a lot of photos when you take the engine off, so you won't miss a step when you put the new replacement in, by going back these photos.

Edit - video is even better as you go to a few video instead many many photo search.

I'm curious as to how someone could blow up a NA v6 engine with that kind of mileage. Was it internal failure (threw a rod, etc.) or was it something like overheating?

Thanks for the input...I am going to go for it unless someone beats me to it. The title is suppose to be here on Monday so I'll keep you all updated. I really really hope I do get to buy it. I was told that it had a coolant leak that destroyed one of the pistons. Don't know exactly but sounds like a head gasket problem or cracked head/block.

I'm praying to see a unique project and not just a 3.2 get tossed in there. Not enough cool engine swap projects around here. 4.2 powahhhhhh

The problem with an outside engine swap is getting correct communication between all the modules beyond just the TCU and ECU. Then there's the matter of fitting things...like AC lines, exhaust, subframe, etc. That would be a more lengthy and expensive project.

OP once it's back together, assuming it ran well and the car needed nothing else I would think you'd have a solid $15-16k car on your hands.
