    audi A8 W12 dyno results

Went to innovative tuning yesterday to make sure the engine is healthy on my W12. It has 84K on it and had a misfire when I bought it. from the looks of the graph I would say it is running 100%. The bad thing now is I have the itch to start messing with it. If I had lift access for a weekend I would pop the engine out and pull all 8 cats out delete the resonator, and check the air boxes to see if they are restrictive and get a good tune on it to see what I can pull out of it.

factory ratings are 450hp/428tq unitronic has a tune that has a rated gain of 29hp/28tq. I bet a custom tune and the removal of 8 cats and a resonator would be substantial. With that said the car is a monster so I will probably not do anything to it for the sake of preserving resale value.

Looks very healthy. With a 25% DTL, you're making 508hp/512tq.

not sure. It is not direct injection if that answers your question. I don't think the W12 ever was unless they changed it for 2013 when they increased the displacement to 6.3L

I see. So it's the same w12 since 2003 that they first debuted in the D2's last year. Definitely an awesome engine. I would love to see the v10's dyno sheet.

The new W12 is FSI. The dealership got one before I left and it was cool until you had to fill it with oil. It took the shop foreman 45 minutes to fill it with oil because the opening in the middle is so small and fills up quickly.

how annoying. They have to know it is a pain in the balls to fill more than 3 gallons of oil into a small hole like that

with the help of a friend I removed the exhaust today. turns out the car only has 4 cats at the manifolds. then (4) 1 3/4" pipes to a resonator to 2 (2) 2 1/4" pipes to another resonator to (2) 2 1/2- 2 3/4" pipes to 2 mufflers. we unbolted the exhaust behind the first resonator and I have to say. It has the worst fucking exhaust note I have ever herd! it is fucking horrible. The car is completely miserable to drive right now. Now I know why audi made this engine completely silent.

It sounds like he just removed it. I don't think too many companies have come out with an exhaust for that engine.

Why would they? They'd sell like 3 of them. He could get one made though, I'm sure with a few mufflers it would sound so mean

I came here to post a update and realized I never linked he videos to this thread. I think the car was actually faster with the exhaust on the car. I would asume the tune needs to be changed to gain power from the removed exhaust. The fact that there was a change tells me that there might be some gains to be had by reworking the exhaust and retuning the car. The exhaust was reinstalled shortly after this clip was taken. It was not loud in the car at all thanks to a soundproof car!

I just got my ECU back from getting it remapped and the butt dyno says there is a pretty noticeable change in the top rpm range. I will be sending some logs back to the tuner to make sure the engine is happy with the changes. I am also looking into having the TCU modified to increase shiftpoints by at least 1K and trying ot get rid of the horribly slow shift programing from the factory. Once the tuner is happy with the loggs I will return to the dyno for some more number to see if my butt dyno is accurate.

Pulling the cats will likely result in a net decrease in power. Audi and VW engineers are doing everything they can to make sure that their engines perform. At most you will see a change in the power curve and no appreciable increase in power. Consider the intake flaps. Who would have imagined that changing the flow in the intake manifold would have a profound difference in performance. Makes all those Edelbrock intakes from the 60s and 70s just nothing more than crude guesswork which is what they are.

If you want more power, then look at the changes that Audi made to the W12 starting in 2010 or 2018. 2010 w12 engines are rated at 500 hp. The newest W12 is higher yet. 2009 and earlier w12 engines are rated at 450hp.

Pulling cats always shows a increase in power. They are nothing but a restriction for power. The changes to the 6.3 w12 was not only a increase in displacement which is a power gain but also the 6.3 moved to direct injection. Those changes are not something that would be reasonable to do on a older w12

    I beg to differ.

Audi spent hundreds of thousands of dollars squeaking out every bit of power from the 4.2 and larger engines. Do you really think that they would compromise performance because they wanted to save a few bucks on a small cat?

I saw a friend of the family put a high performance exhaust on a VR6. For $2500 he saw a 3 hp increase at the top end but a net decrease of 10 hp at the lower RPM range.

In short yes i do 100% know for fact there are power gains from removing cats. You have to be mindful that audi cannot design engines for max power above everything else. They still must meet emissions compliance. There is a limited space they have to work with. Engineering a car always has comprimises. If you change the goals then you can change the power levels.

Wait! Stop! Open the garage door! The terrible sounding engine is not worth killing yourself over! BTW Bentleys are less silenced but even with turbos this engine sounds like nothing else...nice that is
