My big question is are we getting a sports back at the end of this year or is it fully sedan this year? Any idea?
MQB is a completely new, modular architecture utilized by Volkswagen and Audi. MQB is for transverse mounted engines and was engineered by VW. MLB is a similar architecture that was pioneered by Audi for its latitudinally mounted vehicles and has been in use by the A4, A5, Q5, A6, A7 and A8 starting in 2008.
The major changes are significant weight reduction and a much more modular approach to everything, including assembly. MQB is not a traditional platform like in the past where the chassis was fixed and the only changes were to the 'top hat' and the interior. MQB allows everything to be flexible and customized to the vehicle in question with the exception of the the engine mount and the distance between the front axle and the pedal box in the cabin. Otherwise wheelbase, width, front and rear overhangs, height, etc. are malleable, along with the ability to better mix and match materials (ie: Audi will use more aluminum components to save weight).
The A3 sedan is the only A3 model that Audi has so far confirmed for the US. Audi of America has stated as recently as December that they are investigating the A3 Sportback for US sale, but no decision has been made. They are specifically interested in the A3 Sportback for "alternative drivetrain options".
What this means for the timing of US introduction is pure speculation at this point. What we do know for certain is that the A3 Sedan will be shown in production guise sometime between Geneva, two weeks from now, and the IAAS in Frankfurt in September. The rumor, however, is that the sedan will likely bow at Shanghai in April since the car is specifically targeted at China and the US. The timing is about right because the Gyor, Hungary factory is where the A3 will be built initially and volume manufacture is slated to start there in May. There are different reports for actual on-sale dates. Some say that the A3 will be on lots by late summer (August), others are arguing end of 2013 into 2014. Nobody really knows at this point, it's pure speculation.
Audi of America stated last year their intent to bring the Q3 to the US. If they do this the business case for the Sportback becomes very difficult to support. My guess is that much like with the A4 Avant/Allroad/Q5 we will see the Q3 introduced along with an alt-powertrain Sportback (think Audi e-gas project, hybrid, e-tron, etc.).
