    4" Oval exhaust tubing

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So, I am going to be getting 034 3" dp's soon enough and want to do a 4" custom single exhaust, but am concerned with ground clearance. Been talking with a few members privately and would like more input. I don't remember if this topic has been discussed or not? If so, I apologize in advance.

Anyone have any experience running the oval piping? Doesn't even need to be experience with doing it on Audi's but of course preferred. Inteterested in preserving as much ground clearance as possible but flowing as much as possible. Flow is nominally less when considering 4" oval vs 4" round, closer to 3.5" round but a bit better. Kind of in the middle, but still better flow and clearance than the 3.5 single.

Overkill or just go for the full 034 treatment and be done with it.

mine does bump/hit on a lot of surfaces. have to poke over speed bumps, come up my driveway at an angle. maybe just straight up 4" and then oval in a few places?

Thought about that too, mixing in oval where best suited. What kind of mufflers and where are they located? I'm looking at vibrant products (4" inlet with dual 3" outlet) for rear muffler, but been told a mid muffler and rear resonator would be quietest in cabin, which rules out my idea of keeping a dual tip exit. But, would think it is easier to stuff a rear muffler up high enough rather than mid in order to maximize clearance. More thoughts and input please.

And I scrape with my dual 2.5. Even had to construct ramps out of box steel for my driveway. Lame! Too narrow to come in at enough angle.

^ yes and coilovers with the car lowered make scraping more abundant. i have 2 magnaflows, not sure exactly which model number or anything. im sure the vibrant product works well.

Ya. Sitting at 25 gtf on all four corners. Not slammed by today's standards but lowered nonetheless.

Btw, is your exhaust sound clip posted in the consolidation chatterbox thread? Interested to hear it.

I have considered doing the exact same thing for clearance. I think having oval tubing made would get pretty expensive...

    Found this. Kinda spendy!

    Re: 4" Oval exhaust tubing

It comes pre made oval from several sources. One being vibrant in 5-6 ft lengths...$205 - ouch!

Also saw another being Dr Gas and spintech above

I'm wondering if I can downgrade to mild steel as I live in relatively mild climate as a means to cost savings. Then again it costs what it costs. Ssac aside, mass produced systems aren't cheap either (price wise, not quality for all ssac fans out there).

    Re: 4" Oval exhaust tubing

I have an ssac exhaust and you know what? I would be happier if it were made from a thicker mild steel to do away with some of the rasp and resonance.

I've not done much research on inhibition of corrosion in mild steel, but living in Denver, I've often considered it as an option as there isn't too much to worry about in the way of rust and corrosion.

I'm still concerned about restriction and flow obviously and don't want to cut performance and still don't know the extent of sacrifice by going oval vs round

    Hmmm, full ss?

I fully understand there often being a trade off between performance and comfort. Anything you think would help tone it down some? If you were so inclined but still keeping the 4"

But I gotta say I keep going back to get a 2nd, 3rd and 4th listen...:)

honestly if i knew how it would sound now i would have stayed single 3 all the way back, then when i build my next one, do some cutouts of some sort for kill mode or drag racing. hindsight.

dont get me wrong - at WOT, it sounds fantastically glorious!! whenever im pushing that hard it just adds to the adrenaline rush, i love it! but driving around town, @35 or so, it definitly is overkill, and i my power level is only 6-10 more whp. 80 on the highway is down right rude. s4 00 2.7 is right, you really dont need that much flow, unless youre pushing 600+whp.

Hey Haps, I have 034's 3'inch DP's for 770's matched up with their 3.5inch exhaust and I love it. Fitment is good and much better than my AWE twin 2 setup. If you're concerned about keeping things quiet then it might not be the best route. The bigger DP's are a tremendous improvement. I also swapped my 2.5'inch AWE DP's for the above.

    Stop it. Please.

Dual 3 inch, or dual 2.5.

    Oval 4 is retarded.

Dual 3 is retarded as far as clearance and nvh threshold goes. And dual 2.5, well I already have that and looking to gain more flow and free up restriction. Seen dual 3 in action as I'm sure many others have. No thanks. And this is more a discussion about 3.5 or 4 single, but thanks for playing...

Thanks for more real world experience. What muffler setup did you opt for, mid or rear (or both)?

And I am not overly concerned with quietness, however not looking to be ridiculous either. I think I am leaning toward a 3.5 single system. Most likely 034 or custom.

What bothers me if you will is some of the pictures I've been seeing of 034 3.5 vs say the RAI system. The 034 sags considerably more than the RAI. The RAI system seems noticeably better fitting and more ground clearance friendly. Mind you this is just through casual internet viewing but quite noticeable nonetheless.

I made my own custom 3" dp's to 4" single. I also thought about doing 4" oval in some spots but I think the headache and little extra cost wasnt going to warrant the minimal extra ground clearance. The lowest spot on my system is the 3" v-band clams regardless. I have a vibrant 4" in dual 3" out muffler and an 8" race muffler but I would suggest the 12" reace muffler/resonator if you want it a little quieter. Im also catless.

The 8" race in mid position and dual 3 out rear I assume? I believe vibrant product #1155?

Single muffler in the rear with the mid-pipe to their dp's. It might be considered ridiculous to some, everyone is different, for me it has created a love for overpasses! After driving my b5 for several days, it makes my b7s4 (miltek dp's and stasis exhaust) seem quiet. Completely different exhaust notes but you get the idea.

Here's a pic and some sounds of my 4" exhaust. The rear muffler is the Vibrant dual 3" out single 4" in, and there's a small resonator in the middle (thinking of replacing resonator with a second muffler). In the video the car has no interior door panels, but it is pretty loud daily too. Pretty low as well. Unless you're looking to go balls out, I'd prob suggest to just stay 3.5" for ground clearance and all around ease.

Heres a shot of my 4" just for comparison. I would also prefer a 3.5" simply for ground clearance and in my opinion the 3.5" would flow plenty for my needs. Not sure if its true but I have also heard from multiple people that the 3.5" drones less
