Does anyone know this car? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...t_48590wt_1165

Would be interesting to see how well this car held up after all these miles....i.e repairs/warranty items.

If someone has a CarFax (or similar) account, you could run the VIN #. The damn ebay listing has a ton of pics, but none showing the odometer reading. N00b.

I ran the vin. It really does have 170k+ miles. Car fax didn't have much in it. A few maintenance records, but nothing major.

It has a ton of rock chips visible in the pictures. Seems like it was well kept though.

at 170k miles, it needs the timing *chain* replaced. That is a 22 hour labor job on top of parts. Thinking $3k-5k depending on mechanic and whether you do some extra maintenance while the engine is literally out of the car.

I hope whoever buys that budgets that in, assume it hasn't already been replaced.

22 hour job?!?! pardon what may be a dumb question, but why is it that much harder than a t-belt job? and i thought chains aren't a wear item?

There are some gashes in the back of the drivers seat, the steering wheel is all shiny, and the pedals are filthy. I don't see it going over 15k

Yeah, chains tend to last a lot longer and are not always reccomended to be replaced at scheduled intervals like timing belts are. That said, I think for the B8, the chain is scheduled for replacement at 110k miles ;(

It is very labor intensive. I think the engine literally has to be taken out of the car, much worse than a timing belt job. My friend has a 2006 S4, and he got the belt replaced for $700. He should count himself lucky...

I am pretty sure the 2006 (B6) S4 has the V8 timing chain in the back of the engine. The B5 S4 has a belt and $700 is a ballpark figure for that.

    Past

Chains can stretch. There are adjusters to help deal with that, though.

I think it looks great for a 4 year old car (he probably took delivery in 2009) with 170k miles! Probably mostly highway miles. Pop in a new facelift steering wheel and you're cookin!

Correct, the B6/B7 S4 has a rear-mounted timing chain. That had to be done to make it fit into the engine bay. The other 4.2L V8 that came before it (S6, S8) was a belt.

Yeah, my friend with the $700 timing belt replacement has the V8 so I may have the year wrong.

There's likely a procedure to check the chain slack (through some VCDS values of the tensioners) and use that as a rule to determine replacement.

4 days left with 62 bids? The mileage is not scaring many people it seems. I mean hell, i would pay $10k for it!

UPDATE: According to Manheim's MMR this should fetch around $22k.... seems a bit extreme IMO.

2 things.......if you recall, there was an article posted here about the 3.0T engine in great detail. It was some sort of VAG document....... Anyways, in that document, it mentions the timing chain not requiring any maintenance or replacement. Now take that with a grain of salt if you will but it's likely far ahead of the "chain" technology of the old VR6 days which you could still get over 200k out of.

And if the buyer should be worried about anything, I would think it would be the Stronic transmission.

Think of it this way: that car has been driven 71% of the way to the moon (239k miles away). Very little by way of the B8 track record for that high of miles to compare actual costs to, so much of the speculation is just that.

170k is a huge amount of miles, highway or not. You may get a deal on the front end, but be prepared to spend some $$$ immediately or down the road on anything and everything as wear is wear.

I am surprised to see a vehicle in California with such mileage but its not unheard of in the south. My parents put 100k in 2 years on their X5. If it can be proven to be mostly highway driven i think its a steal. The wear and tear of highway miles is no where near comparable to stop and go and also consider the roads. I hit, what feels like, 7-10 small speed bumps, on a major road on the way to the train station every morning over a 2 mile distance. i'll take long range smooth highway miles over the roads here in NY ANY DAY over short trips where you feel like you are constantly offroading.

hell, this thing is almost worth purchasing for me to use as a daily to get to the train station and back every day lol... damn i wish i had a few extra bucks right now.

That's why I said it's a great deal for making a pure track car. You will make a complete overhaul and modification to it anyway so 170k means nothing in that case.

    2010 S4 with 170k miles

I don't know.... Part of my strategy for 'life' in general has been to always consider 'worst case scenario.' It's a bit pessimistic, but has yielded me plenty of gains in life with minimal loss.
Please bear in mind I have no idea what these actual costs are:

    So $10,000 for the S4.
-total transmission failure: $6,000-$10,000 maybe more, I have no idea what a DSG tranny costs!

-complete engine failure: $??? $10,000+ for new engine... Or $5,000-$10,000 for thorough rebuild.

Supercharger failure? How many miles do superchargers last?

I find it inconceivable that the suspension isn't in horrible shape either, regardless of highway miles
-all new suspension components: control arms, strut mounts, shocks, springs...

Miscellaneous failures: Transfer case, differential, rusted out intercooler/heat exchanger, fuel pump, various solenoids etc.

Even BEST case scenario will likely put you at least $20,000 for a car that has almost 200,000miles & highly unlikely anyone will buy it from you for $20,000 with that much on the odometer.

Dude the car is 4 years old. Age has a much bigger impact than mileage. My car is 2 years old and has 50,000 miles on it and still feels brand new. I would be shocked if this car's suspension had any issues, let alone finding rust anywhere.
