    Question A5 Multitronic WITH Tiptronic?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hello guys,

Just recently ordered an A5 Sportback for the Mrs. It's the 1.8 TFSI (multitronic). I'm sorry if this is a terribly stupid question but had to ask.

I was searching the Option Codes and the code '1XX' apparently stands for "Leather trimmed multi-function sports steering wheel w/ Tiptronic". So I google Tiptronic and comparisons show up against Multitronic, which is very confusing. Are these two different types of transmissions or is it actually Multitronic with tiptronic?

    A5 Multitronic WITH Tiptronic?

Multitronic is usually in fwd cvt and tiptronic is a regular geared automatic tranny. Usually in Quattro.

But many Multitronic transmission have the tiptronic function which is basically allowing manual gear shifting.

Hi Radiohead, what that means is that you will have gear shift paddles on your steering wheel which allows you to switch gears in manual mode as 2.7audi already mentioned. :)

    Correct.

Multitronic is the awful CVT transmission that is more fuel efficienct (and much less sporty), and thus is paired with the front-wheel-drive models.

Tiptronic is the 8 speed conventional automatic that is available in Quattro models. Though it is not as sporty as the dual-clutch set up of the 7-speed S-tronic, it is still a far superior option than the CVT.

Both the multitronic and tiptronic have "8 speeds", with the difference being that the tiptronic has 8 actual gears, and the multitronic having 8 artificial "shift points"

    Hope this helps.

The ZF8HP used in B8 quattro cars is definitely one of the best toque converter equipped automatic gearboxes available today.

So I gather the multitronic with tiptronic is still "the awful CVT transmission"?

Avoid the cvt if possible. Quattro is much more fun to drive at the sacrifice of 1~2 mpg but it is much more reliable.

Right. I don't really mind paying more for the engine or quattro, it's just that didn't think my wife would need a bigger engine. I did get most of the options though; B&O, Cruise Control, Sunroof, Xenon lights, Keyless etc. But I'll speak with the dealership about getting rid of CVT.

Let me clarify, it is awful for enthusiasts, but perfectly fine for those who are looking to maximize fuel economy. I assume since this is for your wife (and a big assumption here), she is not too much into fast shifting and hard acceleration. In this case, the multitronic is the perfect option.

Thanks for the clarification and the help everyone. Just one more question, I've read and heard about the oil consumption problem in Audi's (friend had an A8 (2009), which would use up about a litre of oil every 800-900miles). Can someone tell me if Audi have fixed this in their newer engines? A friend of mine who drives an A4 (2013) tells me his car is not consuming any oil and that he used to have to top up once or twice between oil changes in his A4 that he sold last year. So according to him, the problem doesn't exist in the newer engines.

    can anyone confirm this?

2012 A5 2.0T, I have to add a liter of oil once or twice between regular oil changes, it's basically normal.

I drive a BMW and have never had to top up, the oil level never goes down. I have the oil changed every 3000miles.

In all honesty it is a hit or miss. I know that when the B8 A4 was released in 2009, quite a few cars had this issue. The issue still exists with SOME 2010/11/12, but it was MUCH less frequent. I think you will be alright. I know my car only sucks oil when I rev the engine when the car is not fully warmed up yet. Otherwise, no issues whatsoever.

Hey man, I love BMWs and Audis, but BMW does have their fair share of problems as well. Especially after working with the E90/92 335i with the N54, I can safely say I would never even touch that engine, even though with a stage 2 that car is in the 450 hp/450 tq range. The N55 fixed a lot of those problems, but also can't be tuned to nearly the same level of power.

I'm sure people have trouble with BMW's, I have a 650i though, bought it new back in 2008, havent had any problems yet. The reason the oil consumption problem bothers and scares me is because anyone with a pre-2011 Audi I've spoken with has had their car consuming oil. I'm sure there are Mercedes' and BMW's that consume oil or have their own issues, but I can't believe it being this widespread.

I can understand the odd car having its unique problem(s), but Audi should've gotten rid of this by now since it has affected so many people for so long.
