probably going to be picking up a block shortly for my engine build.

so i've spent quite a bit of time researching this. Everybody online states almost all blocks are swappable with some notations.

my question is, is there any blcok that is exactly the same as the AMB block? they all have slight casting variations, thermostat housing, accessory mount points, oil squirters.

pretty much seems that VW/Audi casted an entirely different block for every car? although they are compatible they're not 100% exactly the same?

    thanks

Barry, I may be wrong but all 058 blocks are the same, all 06A blocks are the same and all 06B blocks are the same.

There might be some variations in thermostat housing mounting points etc. but only minor differences.

When I swapped in an 06A from a golf, the only issue I had was the location for the thermostat housing on the block was shallower than the one from my Audi. I had seen Doug had had the same issue with his swap and he simply filed down the thermostat housing to fit. I did the exact same and never had a leak.

Yep, this is the correct answer based on the blocks that I've seen. Also on some blocks the oil filter housing side may have casting/webbing that looks different, but all 06a blocks are the same.

So all 06A blocks are the same, besides the fact that if the 06A block was from a VW it has a shallower thermostat housing? That would then pretty much leave me to any 1.8t from 2001+ VW or Audi? in the case of not needing to modify anything (thermostat depth) at all the block would need to be only from 2002-2005 A4 1.8t?

I believe blocks out of the TT still have a slightly different casting/webbing. Also thermostat housing may still require some work since they are technically not AMB motors.

Even B5 06A blocks have the shallow thermostat flange. The block in my B6 came from a late model B5 A4 and I had to have the thermostat flange machined.

If you are having machine work done (bore/hone) than get any 06A block and have them machine the thermostat housing to fit your B6 A4 thermostat. That is what I did.
