My car is telling me it's a balmy 38º outside but I have a feeling it's just a little bit colder.

So I stopped by the Audi dealer and picked up a new sensor. Now, can anyone point me in the direction where it's located so I can replace it?

    Thanks!

IIRC it's near the bottom of the front bumper. Dealer could've printed you an exploded diagram....

Yeah, well I thought it was in one of the fog light grilles and didn't bother asking the dealer. I was thinking I'd just replace it in the parking lot. When I took the grilles off all I found were dead bugs but no sensors...

And the dead bugs don't work as latent temperature sensors ???

Not a very scientific way to measure outside temps but I'll give the bugs a shot...

It's behind the front grille... sort of behind the filler plate area. To my knowledge the bumper / grille have to be slid out (in maintenance mode) to replace the temperature sensor. Please let me know if you are able to replace it without doing this. (Mine tends to read high - so i'd like to try a new one also).

Thanks! I was hoping that I won't have to remove it but it seems that everything in this car is behind the damned bumper. Change a light bulb? Remove the bumper! Sheesh!

Its amazing to me. No matter how precision engineered these damn audi's are they might be the most poorly designed from a service standpoint.

You can easily reach it with your hand. Often if it falls out of its spot it could be just dangling around down there. I have seen it before.

I just saw it when I had the bumper off a few days ago.
It sits in clip horizontallyand it's in front of the AC condenser.
IMO the bumper has to come off but maybe there's a way to get your hand in there.

I'm guessing for a B7 the bumper has to come off and for a B6 it doesn't.

I feel you. At least make the grill and headlights removable like most cars.

$28 including tax at Town Audi. I would've bought the one from ECS which is $18 but was right by the dealership and thought I could change it right in the parking lot so I went for it.

ah not bad. ECS would of charged you like $20 shipping so you probably saved money anyway :D
i do wonder if this can be done with just the belly pan removed, probably a lot of stuff in the way though.

Or perhaps, they've precision engineered the serviceability such that it's more likely you'll go back to the dealer instead of fixing it yourself...

You know...that would actually make more sense to me if Audi actually made money on servicing of the car. They don't -- in fact, since they have to reimburse the dealership for in-warranty repairs you would think they would want to make things as quick and simple as possible. I guess servcieability is lower on the priority list when it comes to their car design plan. And this isn't just Audi's (although they are particularly bad) -- european cars in general are more difficult to maintain (IMO) than their Japanese or American counterparts.

    Anyways, sorry to stray OT.

I always figured they like to read a little high...went to get gas this morning in mine and it was registering 18F, jumped in my other car to go somewhere and it read 13-14F. Yours seemed like it was reading a bit higher

It is a cultural thing. People don't really work on their own cars. They're just used to going to the indie mechanic or dealer.

You got me there...I guess I just view all of Audi's outlets as big bad Audi.

All of this Audi bashing..? I don't understand why because the temperature sensor is not really a common part to replace since it sees very small temperature stress when compared to other sensors. Second, the bumper is ridiculous easy to remove, as are the headlights.

On my B6 it is as mentioned above directly in front of the ac cond. this puts it in a fresh airstream when in motion. Any sensor in close proximity to the engine is bound to read a little high or if direct sun is on the front side.

For the technology in these cars they are surprisingly easy to work on given the amount of components they feature over less complex designs.

Should expect this when you buy one of these and cannot afford service.
