Intercooler pipe sizing question. 2" vs. 2.5" for big turbo

So I got my intercooler core for my build which has 2.5" outlets both sides. Which one would I benefit more from? flow vs. lag? turbo going in is a 71r Elim.

I've read threads of the benefit of a 2" hot pipe and 2.5" cold side ( hot side being turbo side of the FMIC and cold side being the throttle body side) being that the air is more dense after the FMIC and smaller hot pipe helps the velocity to get the hot charge cooled faster (into the FMIC). Unfortunately I have not experienced it personally, just read. =\ good luck, sorry if this was no help, haha.

Just trying to decide between a Cxracing piping kit (2.5", $299) or a speedy racer ebay full kit (lolol) which is 2", and a little cheaper. I plan to trash the core and use one ive already got and use some higher quality t-bolt clamps.

Is it the pre bent kit for our car from CX racing? If so then their kit does start as 2" and becomes 2.5" on the cold size. Is $299 what they're charging for their pipes? Seems kind of pricy since their complete FMIC kit is $350-380 shipped. If you were to make your own piping it would be a bit of work and you would need a map sensor flange welded as well as down time on your car, if its your DD

I didn't notice much difference going from 2 to 2.5 on that turbo. Does it flow more? Probably but it's hardly measurable and there are alot of other areas you can gain spool and power from first.

Yeah $299 is what I was quoted when I emailed them. I figure subtracting the core doesnt take much $$ because its about as dense as a soda can? Idk though never seen one in person

Understandable. Ive just bought the 034 large TIP off the classifieds and the adapter from 034. I have the stock cat and dp to figure out what im gonna do with, I have a borla dp back. Thinking 034 Hfc and tt downpipe? Or is that going to be restrictive?

2.5" inlet and outlet, just go with 2.5" piping. 2" is stock isn't it? You'll want something bigger for a 71r.

I have a friends Racetec intercooler I've been looking for 2.5" piping for, for my 71r installation. What a pain in the ass..

Larger diameter piping means a slower air velocity.

for a 71R you'd probably be just fine with 2" hot 2.25" cold or 2.25/2.5.

I would add a thumbs up for the piping from CX Racing. They use nice thick 2mm wall tubing for their pipes which is much easier to work with when fabricating pipers and it won't crush as easily when tightening clamps.

Yeah I just got off the phone with CX. Got the piping kit w/ black silicone for $315 shipped across the country. My core from silicone intakes looks to be of nice quality, heavy duty B&P construction, but I bought it thinking it was going to be for a frankenturbo. Dan[fn]6262 said those belong in a kids meal, so I got a 71r. I will be logging to see if this will support the larger turbo, I hope so.

As long as you have all the parts, a few spare clamps and tools you should be all set. Just take your time and be patient. I have a hard time with the patient part..
