    Question Adding shift paddles

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi,

I have a Premium - so it comes with the standard wheel without the shift paddles and want to know if it is possible to add the shift paddles to the steering wheels without changing the wheel itself. I am aware that probably some Vag-Com has to be done.

    Thanks in advance,

    Daniel

What if I don't have paddle shifting on my car serial, and I want to install it. What I need to do ? Anyone installed ?

If you could find some shift paddles to fit your current steering wheel, it could be done. The Tiptronic up/down shift (F189) on the gear selector (J587) sends a signal to the transmission (figure it is a ground signal, maybe a voltage one though, wouldn't be hard to figure out). Just add some paddles to the steering wheel and splice them into the tip shift circuits. Unless there is something I'm missing, all you'd need is 2 switches (or cool looking paddles functioning as switches) and perform some wiring.

You need a wheel with paddles and a compatible airbag. Most paddle wheels are three spoke. If you have a four spoke wheel, you would need a new three spoke airbag. (The four spoke wheel and the three spoke wheel use unique/incompatible airbags). I got a rare four spoke wheel with paddles, so I didn't need to buy a new airbag. Once you have the wheel installed, you need to tell the steering module that your car has paddles using vag com (easy coding change).

Unless you get an airbag from a different model, it should be plug and play. Coding is about as simple as could be.

I know that all, but thanks anyway.

Problem is how to connect paddle shifters and activate them. Do I need some extra wires and jacks ?

No, the paddles are wired into the multifunction controls which come with every wheel. Paddle wheels have multifunction controls that wired with the paddles.

That means no extra wires ? Even not from car to the wheel ? Niice !! Now I really think about this mod, beacuse it's a much easier to find flat bottom wheel with paddles. Thanks !

Yes, you don't have to do any wiring if you get a compatible B8 airbag. If you get a flat bottom wheel, the airbag harness may need to be modified. Alex at Europrice modifies the harness to fit your car for you if you order from him.

Take my retrofit as an example. I pulled my airbag and disconnected its harness from the steering column and from the multifunction controls. Installed my new four spoke paddle wheel, connected the multifunction controls to the airbag harness, and connected the harness back to the steering column. I then did the vag com coding change. That's it.

    I wonder 2 things:

    1) Can the paddles be attached physically? Does themounting holes/base are there?
    2) Does the cables and modules are present on the steeringwheel?

    1) No, it is uninterrupted smooth leather where the paddles would be.
    2) No, the multifunction controls on my non-paddle wheel did not have the extra connectors for the paddles.
