So on my quest to fix up some of the blemishes on my car the steering wheel has alot of paint stripped from use. Anyone have any tips on how to make it look better?

I was wondering this myself. Mine is platinum, and I'd like to die it black. Has anyone ever tried dying a steering wheel?

i have fade on my steering wheel and shifter knob. Doesn't bother me at all. Kinda like it. Peeling buttons is the only thing that pisses me off. I think your only option is to buy a new steering wheel or wrap it

If it is just the leather that has faded go to leatherworldtech.com and pick up some dye.

good input. I wonder how well that will come out and how permanent it would be.

If you follow the instructions it will come out fine and will be permanent. All your leather is bleached and dyed to begin with. When was the last time you saw a Platinum cow??

    I bought this http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Brand-New-Bla...vxp=mtr&_uhb=1
And it seems to be holding up pretty nice. The thread is good quality too. It might take some time to stitch. I like it, it looks like a newer steering wheel but it does add a bit of thickness. Ill take some pics if anyone wants any. Its really cheap too and no sign of fading after 3 months of use. Im not sure if the one i bought was medium, ill double check if anyone wants to know.

You said paint stripped, but the steering wheel is not painted. Post up a picture so we can actually see what is going on with it.

I've dyed steering wheels with the dye from Leather World Technologies. Your wheel will look brand new when you do it, you need to make sure to take your time to do it right - your wheel has a lot of built up oils from your hands in it. Need to clean it real well and use thier prep wash stuff which basically dissolves some of the old finish, and buy the little bottle of adhesion promoter to add to the dye. It's a pretty simple job as DIY jobs go if you take your time. It's not quite as durable as facotry dye - nothing is, but you'll get enough in a bottle to yours and everyone you know.

The round part you hold is not "painted" but dyed, but it is the kind of dye that is only on the surface so it more or less can be thought of as paint. Hand oils dissolve the dye with time where you hold it and the bare leather shows through.

And to the OP, if you do decide to do it, don't sand your sterring wheel like the instructions will say. Thats' really for seats. Too easy to turn your wheel into suede of you sand. It's just a mtter of wiping the wheel with cleaners and prep wash, and using a good quality small brush - like a 1/2" artist's brush to paint it on. It's water based, so it dries in minutes.

I'm sorry about saying "painted", i meant dyed. but i was typing fast. i will get pictures up tomorrow. The dye is just very faded in the 7 and 5 o'clock positions. ^^ that actually seems like a very good idea if the leather looks good. i would love to see pictures. i have the "tan" interior which i wish some much it was black, so options maybe limbited. I will however not be plasticoating my steering wheel..

that perforated leather wrap actually looks pretty damn good.
Atleast way better than some of the other steering wheel wrap jobs i've seen. if mine ever starts fading alot i would consider that.
