    Average 3.0 oil consumption?

What's up audizine I had a quick question that I've searched an found different answers for. I have an 03 6 speed a4 3.0 v6 with 178k on it. About 2200 miles ago I changed my oil with German Titan synthetic oil 5w40 and today on my way to class my yellow not red warning light popped up on my dash (this has happened to me before) pulled into a gas station and picked up a quart of oil and added about 3/4 until the appropriate level was reached.

Now my question is, is roughly a quart every ~2200 miles is a bit excessive no? Even at this mileage. I change my oil with full synthetic every 3k as my mechanic recommend to me. There are never any oil spots under my car and the valve cover gaskets were replaced when I had the timing belt and water pump replaced. I asked my mechanic about it a few months back and he said not to worry about because the new b8s burn a quart every 1000 miles. I did a compression test on all 6 cylinders Over the Summer and across all 6 cylinders I had 180-190psi. Should I be worried? Will there be a 2.7t swap in my future? Hahaha

    Thanks!

yea thats a bit excessive. i can go 7500 miles (my oil change interval) and never need to add any but i'm just over 100k. i also had my valve cover gaskets replaced when i did my tbelt but a faulty pcv system blew those out fairly quickly. pull the coil packs and see if you have oil pooling around the spark plugs.

I'm not sure how much mine burns but I have to add oil between oil changes. Probably right about in the same mileage range as you. I'm not worried as I've been driving the car for 5 years and its been like that since I got it ;).
I could write something cliché and insightful, but that would be too cliché and insightful.

I have about 190,000 miles on my 03, and (sometimes) I have to add about 1/4 quart at 5000 miles (I change around 7000 miles). Usually I don't need to add anything.

I try to keep the oil level right in the middle of the low/high marks on the stick.

    I run 0w-30 german castrol year-round.

Rotella T6 and I go 6k between changes and do not need to add any. 127k

Now with mobile 1 0w40 and lubro moly I would have to add 1/2 qt.

It also depends how much oil you had to begin with. When I do oil change, I think I put enough, but I am actually slightly short. And usually I had to add oil between oil changes.

But I think, my problem was due to leaking valve cover gaskets and shitty PVC valve. I recently changed them and noticed how much oil was in the piping and leaked all over engine.

I have to add about 3/4 of a liter every 3000 miles on mobil 0 w40. But let me ask you guys this. My manual states that the oil capacity is 5.5 liters, but every time I change the oil, I have to add about 6.25 liters for the oil to be at the middle of the dipstick. You guys experiencing this?

How does Pcv valves affect this? And how can I tell whether or not they're functioning correctly?

Mine valve covers were leaking and when pulled the oil cap when engine was running rpms weren't stable. After change I could hear it sucking air and engine was smoother.

Also bad PVC will lead to misfires

That seems the correct amount needed to fill it up. Why does my owner manual state 5.5l??

It's about 6 and half quarts for an oil change on mine, I have to add about 1/2 every 5k miles (oil change interval). I change my filter. Just recently changed my oil pan due to a cross threaded plug, that bumped the oil consumption to almost one quart (it was on the belly pan) but now with the new pan is back to 1/2.

5.5 is probably the sump capacity. And the additional may be from the oil cooler+ oil filter?

Alright so when I remove my oil filler cap WITH the engine running the engine itself does start to shake. Does that mean my Pcv system is shot? I had a pretty bad misfire at idle until I changed my coilpacks and spark plugs. That helped significantly but I still feel a slight one at idle. Should I also change the Pcv? That can't be a big job right? How much does it go for?

I may not be right here but I think if it starts to shake when the cap is open it's normal because the car can't hold vacuum. Lots of cars will not idle properly with the oil cap open.

You think it's worth it to change them anyway? At this mileage, unknown when it was changed last.....
