2008 A6 Unsuccessful oil change attempt

Thought I would share this since I haven't found anything out there regarding the oil drain plug on the 2008 A6. I've always been a DIY oil change etc type person. This A6 had Audi care on it when I bought it, so today was going to be my first oil change attempt on it. Put in on the ramps, pulled the belly pan off, and went to loosen the drain plug and.... frozen. Frozen like it has never been moved before. I gave it another shot and ended up stripping the 6mm hex. FCUK. Called the Audi dealership to schedule an oil change and asked them if they would mind installing a QuikValve when complete instead of the drain plug. The service guy said that on that model A6, we DO NOT USE the drain plug because Audi absolutely tightens the hell out of it and everyone was stripping them out, etc. So now the procedure at the dealership for an oil change is to remove the oil through the crankcase lines using a fluid extractor, which is why the drain plug has never been removed. So now I'm wondering how to unfcuk my situation with the drain plug. i don't have access to a welder to weld a socket on and torque it off. My best bet is probably taking it to a non-audi shop who will attempt to remove the plug and put the qwikValve on so that I can go back to changing my own oil instead of paying 100+ everytime at the dealership.

Just try with an impact gun or breaker bar.

Grab a breaker-bar and a set of these. You'll ruin the original nut but you're gonna put a quick drain on anyway. These are at Autozone, Sears, Home Depot Etc. They've saved me a bunch of times and it will get you back on track ASAP.

well, you can drop the oil pan and hopefully there is enough thread that you can grip it with vise grips and start to rotate it out.

if that didnt work, since you got the pan out find someone to weld a head onto the 6mm allen.

Leave it alone and use an oil extractor through the dip stick tube.

Re: 2008 A6 Unsuccessful oil change attempt

It's a c6, 3.2 Quattro. I just talked to my uncle who has a decent amount of welding experience, and a mig welder, and he was familiar with this problem because his Volvo oil plug is also very hard to get out. He said he wasn't very comfortable putting the heat of a weld on the plug knowing the other side is full of flammable fluid. I'll probably pony up and get an extractor. For those of you with experience with the extraction, how do you know when you find bottom when fishing the tube down past the valve train through the fill port? Seems like it would be almost impossible too get to the bottom of the oil pan that way in order to extract all the oil.. dipstick tube is too small.

So I went with a pneumatic extractor, mityvac 7300 for 110 shipped. It comes with dipstick tubes and all. Saves money in the long run. Cheapest oil change I can find is 105. Seven quarts of mobile 1 and a filter costs me 66$. I'm not giving away 40$ every time and waiting in line.

How often are you supposed to change the oil? I just had mine in for the 35k service and the last oil change was the previous manufactured service. I've had to add a quart of oil about every other month but other than that I didn't do anything.

Every 10K according to Audi. I personally am not comfortable with that interval and am going for every 5-7k. Im at 7k right now and my oil is very dirty.

I just recently bought a mityvac fluid extractor and worked great when I changed the oil recently. I plan on changing the oil in between the factory recommended interval primarily because I track the car 2-4 times a year. So much easier changing the oil this way than draining from the bottom. I bought 8 qt's, used 7, of castrol synthetic 10w40 that is approved for this car. Oil was about $9/qt plus the filter from the dealer.

I just got the mityvac and it doesn't look like any of the dipstick tubes are a small enough diameter to fit inside the dipstick tube?! I haven't tried because I'm busy with the kids right now, but does anyone know if one of the supplied tubes will fit? If not, how do you extract?

Edit: never mind. The smallest tube fits. Just tried it. I had it in my head that the dipstick tube was super slim. Gonna give this a whirl tomorrow.

Well the Mityvac is the tits. I pulled out about 6.2 liters and put in about 6.75 quarts and I'm at full on dipstick. I did the whole job in normal clothes in about 25 minutes. Slick. Her is a quick video of its operation. I ran 100 psi through it.
