    Regular fuel on 3.2L

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi,

Sorry if this is a repost but read on my A5's users guide that you can get away with regular fuel instead of premium. They still recommend premium but not a problem saving some money

Can anyone confirm this? I know with turbo engines it is mandatory to put premium but what about 3.2L? or even 4.2L?

To clarify, I traded in my Audi TT and got a 2009 A5 3.2L S-Line....I know it is used/old but new to me

Don't do it!! you simply asking for trouble. this engines run on even better gas in europe than premium gas. Premium here is regular in europe, anything below 91 octane rate will damage your engine parts like catalytic converters and they are super expensive. Another issue is premium gas burns cleaner and engine uses less gas, if you use regular gas engine is forced to put more gas to combustion chamber in order to make up the power...conclusion is that at the end of the day you not gonna save any money.

Get a credit card that gives you good cash back on gas, fill up with premium, end of the month make up your losses...

Check this out. They don't test a vehicle designed for higher octane fuel but the other results might be of interest and help you form your own opinion.

No they don't. They just use a different octane rating scale in Europe (RON) than us (AKI). Premium 95 RON in Europe is about the same as Premium 91 AKI in North America.

That report is a load of crap. Of course you won't gain any performance by putting premium grade fuel in an engine designed for regular grade. But the reverse is not true.

You're saving maybe $2-3.00 a fill up by using a regular grade instead of premium...I know it's a tough economy, but c'mon now, feed your A5 well!

why getting an A5/S5 in the first place if you are not worried about gas price? I wouldn't recommend anything below 93 on either the 2.0T, 3.2 and 4.2.

95 is Europe's regular gas, 98 is premium so imagine what 91 will do to your engine eventually.

    C'mon...

I used to have a TT which btw had to put premium gas...93-94 octane every time.

What I was trying to see if you were aware of that option, even included in the user's manual. Still, I will use premium fuel on mine...

In regards to the report, I agree that it is misleading as they dont present all options with different engines.

They use a different rating. Their premium is the same as our premium.

As well as getting premium fuel, try to limit the amount of ethanol. Ethanol free fuel is the best since ethanol has lower free energy than pure gas and tends to leave residue on valves. My owner's manual states that 10% ethanol is the maximum allowed and I have recently seen stations around with 15%.
