Damn those look super bush league. For super light duty stuff they'd probably be ok, But I'd be nervous as hell sticking an expensive surfboard and that POS. Have you looked on craigslist? There are always a TON of roof racks available. You might want to look for Passat racks also as they fit our cars.

i would not, a basic roofbar setup from thule is like 350, your kite board and kite i am guessing are multiples over that....

Thanks guys, ya I just don't want to drop $350 on something that I really only need for trips. I've been looking on cragslist but haven't found much. I'll look for a Passat one.

I used to put my Thule box up there with anywhere between 3-8,000$ worth of skis, Never had a problem here...

    Re: Ebay Roof Rack

I would get a better quality, used rack. May function fine, but I just can't see myself trusting thousands worth of gear to a $35 roof rack. Most of the time, you do get what you pay for.

when you put bars that run the length of our car, and the claps are bolted down so they grab tight, it makes that rack insanely solid.. But hey, I have only ski raced for the last 15 years of my life, using roofracks all winter long..

Do you have an Avant? Because the sedan doesn't have bars that run the length, hence the sketchy door frame clasps. BTW I grew up at song / lab / tog / greek etc.

I was considering those, ultimately went wit a set of golf roof racks cut down to fit the A4. They probable will work fine, but like anything that is considerably lower in price than comparable known brands on ebay I was worried about fitment / quality / how well it would hold up in the long run. I plan to use mine a lot in the winter for the foreseeable future, so spent the extra money. If you only plan on using a few times a year and not keeping them on, i would say go for it.

    Other options:
Geartrade.com - if you keep an eye on it for a little while, you can probably piece together a nicely discounted Thule setup

If you're only going a few miles with it then the ebay ones will be fine. Other than that you should invest in a quality piece.

Those will totally be fine. I bought something similar for my Ford Edge to carry 2 kayaks -45lbs each. Used all summer and it was very secure -no problems. Why pay all that money for Thule name.

No, Sedan, When you put the cross bars on, then you mount ANYTHING, whether it is the bars that run the legth of the car, or a thule box that connects the two bars or a kayak, or a ski rack that runs the length of the car, then the rack becomes VERY solid..

Once again, never had a problem with it.

I raced for Ithaca College for a few years and skied lab, greek and togg all the time.. All the 40 mile trips were made with THESE bars and a Thule Evolution box ontop..
    Best regards,
    Sean.

The b5.5 passat racks fit the b6 and b7 avants. They're getting harder to find though, but they're out there. The b6 and b7 A4s share the exact same roof bar setup with the B5.5 Passat. I think the b6 and b7 passat do not however.
