    what has audi done here?? S5 4.2 350bhp VS RS5 4.2 450bhp

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
i am thinking of buying an s5 but when i saw the specs i was shocked. the 2010 s5 has a v8 4.2 FSI and gives 350 bhp, and the rs5 of the same year same motor volume 100+bhp??

can someone explain me this. and also which motor and year would you prefer me by considering power, consumption, price.

    thanks

I would only take a '10 4.2 RS5, 6mt in Monsoon. Most reliable and efficient spec. Happy hunting!

Can you afford the price difference? If you're shopping for an S5 then you are in a different boat.

its probably the same formula as the rs4 4.2 vs the s5 4.2 ... heads, cams, headers, exhaust, intake manifold, intake tract, tuning are all geared towards higher rpms.

This may not be true. I went out an test drove a new S5. I liked it a lot but with 3 people in the car, I felt it a little sluggish. After the test drive, the dealer showed me a pre-order RS5 (already spoken for) in the garage upstairs, I fell in love and without even test driving an RS5, I found and bought one...

That wouldn't apply to you then, but it is still a huge leap in price difference whether new or used that wouldn't be typical of someone to consider.

totally new engine, new ECU mapping, additional 2k Revs, different suspension setup, thicker sway bars, bigger brakes, twin intake, wider wheel base and wheels, additional side radiators, different much better fuel system etc ...
    massive potential for mods ...

I doubt the RS5 has a massive potential for mods, but you can throw interior into that list also.

rs4's respond fairly well to cat delete/catback/tune/lw parts (12.75 stock to 12.2's modded) and very well to a blower (TTS RS4 ran an 11.4 @ 125mph). The motors are built very well and have plenty of headroom. Its not as straightforward as a factory FI car, but there are options.

The RS5's engine is essentially a chopped version of the 10 cylinder used in the R8 5.2 and the Gallardo. The S5's 4.2 V8 I believe is more or less the same engine as the B6/7 S4 (obviously with some updates and minor re-workings), which was a completely different engine. The RS4's though...I dont know

One big difference, the V10 has a dry sump...

s5 has forged rods/pistons (vs cast in the s4). the b6/b7 s4 4.2 wasnt audi's best work, it was the first of the mechanically stripped alusil motors and they have awful issues with cylinder wall scoring, the forged internals seem to help (less expansion). all of the fsi v8's appear to holding up much better than the timing chain mpi 4.2s.

The RS5's engine is a modified V8 R8 with technology that Audi learned from making the V10 R8. Some people get confused since it seems kind of weird at first. Here is a little timeline for you: Audi made the high reving RS4 V8 in 2007, then modified it with a dry sump oil system (along with some other small changes) to fit in the R8 in 2008, then they jammed a modified V10 from the S6/S8 with a dry sump oil system into the R8s in 2009, and now for 2013 we get the RS5 V8.

The S5's engine is dropped in from the Q7 4.2 FSI. The Q7 4.2 FSI came out in 2007 along with the RS4 V8 and the Q7 engine was dropped into most of the bigger cars as an option for the A6 or standard for the facelifted A8s. The B6/7 S4 V8 is the test bed engine between the old timing belt engines and the newer FSI engines. Most people don't know this but the 2004 to 2006 V8 A8s were all timing belt engines that had been used in the older C5 A6s.

Beemercer brings up a good point about the RS4s responding to mods and I would expect the same or better results out of the RS5 since the catalytic converters have been so restrictive on the rest of the B8 models.

The RS5 engine proly can take some serious modifications. Would love to see a Supercharger on that engine. Still get a huge laugh watching the APR RS4 on YouTube. That thing is a monster!!

forgot to add the new gearbox, new quatro system the list just goes on ...
about the potential, besides the usual suspension, exhaust, brakes you can enlarge the whole twin intake system, you could reverse the intake manifold and make it short and single system, how about the blower onto it - no need to upgrade the clutch or fuel system they already good, how's that no beneficial, probably looking at 650-700Hp not good enough yet, it won't cut you off on 6500RPM like S5 which with the blower gets about 550hp. that's all without even looking inside the engine.
mate, every car has a potential, BUT being an NA engine you got to ask yourself the question - how FAT is your wallet!!!

Hate to dig up an old thread, but I was wondering if anyone had additional insight into the differences and timeline of the 4.2L V8s Audi has used, particularly as it relates to the RS5's vs. previous cars. There are some loose details in here, but would be interested in hearing anything a bit more in depth, even technical stuff that I might have trouble wrapping my head around. Thanks all.
