    Allroad towing

    Looking to get an allroad.

4.2 vs 2.7T. My choice would be the 2.7T...but the 4.2 Version has a decently higher towing capacity? Why is this? The power of the engine?

Whats with the bags? If i swap to coilovers, will my tow capacity drop?

Simple stage 2 tune and some straights to resolve that issue?

Would be buying it to mainly tow my A6 to the track and such...

The 4.2L V8 has tractor-like torque. As mentioned in a previous thread - I saw German-spec allroad 4.2 barrel past my rental VW Golf, on the Autobahn pulling a 20ft sailboat @110mph( I was doing 97mph)....I thought to myself, "that's nuts!"

The 4.2 has superior brakes and a better tip.I think the difference in tow ratings only has to do with government specs and the fact that euro trailers are balanced differently

Problem here is that no one sells original equipment hitches for Audi dealer doesn't sell like they do in Europe you have to go aftermarket which limits the towing capacity because the way it aftermarket mounts and they are for Class 1 or you are lucky if you find one for Class 2 type hitches..
If you place to tow large trailers, get OEM hitch it will cost you from 800-1000 if you buy from companies that import them or 400-500 if you buy directly from Europe , but exchange will cost you
Oem hitches can handle large loads, do search there are several post in this forum about this one

The 4.2 and the 2.7 have the same tow rating in the US. It is 3300 lb according to the US testing. In Europe the allroad is rated at 5000lb but I'm not sure why they would be different aside from different testing procedures.

As far as tow hitches I would only get the Euro version (like what Bosal sells at ~$800 or user JustMtnB44 makes one for ~$600) since it bolts into the correct location in the rear frame rails and is hidden when not in use.

If you are going to change the suspension to coils make sure you get the correct spring rate for what you are towing. Too soft and you'll bottom out but you don't want them too stiff or it will be a rough ride. I would consider keeping the air suspension because it will self level when you tow which is a nice feature.

Later allroads are said to have an improved torque converter if you are going for a TIP but if an early one has had theirs changed it will work just as well.

if you have tiptronic ,if you plan to tow a lot you need to change transmission fluid before you start doing towing and then at least once a year fluid change keep the transmission in good shape.. if you tow once a while then you be ok but still need to change at least every two years..

There was another thread talking about this just the other day...here it is http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...d-over-my-Baja

Towing capacity of the two engines is the same.

Coilovers instead of air springs will mean you lose the load leveling feature of the rear suspension, so tongue weight combined with stuff in the cargo area means the rear of the car will sag quite a bit. It won't reduce the capacity but might make the car handle poorly.

If you are going to be towing an A6, which is not a light car, I would be looking for a truck not an allroad.

Some 2.7T's have the same front brakes, although I believe only the 4.2's have the vented rear brakes. Transmission for all intents and purposes is the same, although since V8's are later model years they get the updated torque converter.

I hate trucks, which is why i'm looking at an Allroad. Would be looking at a Toureg although the price is still pretty high up there...

Still keeping options open though, I suppose.

What would you guys tow a car with...?

If you want to tow your A6 you are looking at ~4000lb for just the car. Then you add in ~1500lb for a lite weight trailer and you're already over the allroad's limit. That doesn't even count any spares, tires, tools, fuel, food, etc (assuming you're going to the track). You're best bet will be to get something with at least a 7000lb limit which is going to be the trucks and large SUVs (Land Rover, Tahoe, Armada, Toureg, Q7 etc.).
