Water pump replacement w/o doing the timing belt?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Heres the deal, I did the timing belt kit less than a year ago... I now have a leaking water pump :(... I do NOT want to do the whole kit again. Is it somewhat simple to just to the water pump without having to pull the front into service mode? Also, any difficulties with the belt trying to get the new pump in etc?
Any suggestions or help would be appreciated.

    Thanks

No. You'll have to put the car in the service position and remove the timing belt from the water pump sprocket to replace it. Not something you can easily do with the front clip on. I mean I bet somebody, somewhere has done it, but you'll spend more time wresting with things than you would putting the car into the service position anyway...

A place between here and there

By service mode, not sure if you mean removing the front clip or not. But you will need to move the front clip forward. This will entail removing your front bumper, 2 torx bolts that hold the front clip to the chassis, and your torx bumper shock bolts. After this, you can simply slide the front clip forward and this will provide ample working room. Tension will be on the belt and waterpump, so you are going to have to replace the tensioner or reuse it if you feel lucky (I have compressed my current tensioner maybe 3 times and placed the pin back in before I left it in, so it is doable). You will just need to make sure that the belt does not move from any of the teeth on the crank gear or cam gear (with the front clip forward, you can even remove the serpentine belts, covers for the crank gear, and mark it so you know it is at the same spot). With the front clip forward, you will have more than enough working room.

    -drain coolant
-remove TB cover (one that clips to valve cover)
    -remove tensioner
    -replace water pump
    -place tensioner back on
-fill up with coolant (bleed properly)
    -good to go

So basically I'm going to have to do a timing belt change (or the equiv in time/labor) again becasue my water pump crapped out... that about pisses me off to no end:( I've done belts several times over the past several years (in Audi's and VW's) so I know how to do it... it just really makes me mad that it failed so soon... less than a year:(
I guess I'll confirm the failure this weekend without puting it into service mode (moving the bumper out)... if its leaking, like I think it is, then I'll have to order another and spend next weekend doing the switch... :(
I guess I'll try and compress the tensioner too and save that as well...

If its been less than a year, would the water pump be covered under warranty?

I'm going to find my receipts etc and see... Still have to do the work though:( Best case I get a credit for the pump... but I'll still need to buy one in the interim because I can take it out and send it in for a new one while my car sits:(

Did you use sandpaper or equivalent to clean the rust/corrosion from the water pump o-ring sealing surface, and lube the new o-ring before install?

I would. I had a similar issue with a thermostat from ECS. I needed it ASAP so I paid for the new one, and once they received the old one they gave me credit on it.

been there/done that with an aftermarket water pump. you dont have to put the car into full service position, just enough to get access. i had to put a new belt on anyway because when my pump failed it caused the belt to rub on the covers.
