Steering Full Lock Noise

Hi, guys,

When the steering is at full lock (either right or left) and start moving, I hear some sort of low groaning noise and feel as if the front wheels are grinding a bit.
FYI, my car is 100% stock.

For example, you're trying to get your car out from a tight parking spot - first you start the car, put the gear in R or D, turn the steering wheel to the full lock position (either side, left or right doesn't matter), then press the gas pedal to move out of the spot fast (as if you're in a hurry).

I've heard some sorta hissing noise in the past from different cars, i.e. Accord, but my 2008 A4 Quattro or 2004 G35 didn't make any noise when this was performed.

I'm wondering if this is a common behavior on A5/S5/RS5, especially 2013 S5, and trying to see whether or not I should have it checked by the dealer.

Would you guys please try this and respond here with the result?

I, too, have the same problem...there's some kind of screeching sound at full lock. Interested in some feedback too

some ppl say this is a normal behavior on certain models, but it'd be nice to know if it's actually "normal" on our cars.

Mine does the same thing. Its not very loud, I dont notice it often..... My car is a 2013 S5 6MT

btw, I haven't done the tinting yet....been crazy busy for the past few weekends.
I'm gonna call them and see if they're available this Saturday.
did you watch them install on your RS5?
did they cover the interior appropriately?
how would you rate their work and professionalism?

I know what you mean, Ive been up in Carmel, Big Bear, etc for work.. havent posted cats lately on the forum, and I didnt go to the G2G this past sunday either

Make sure you make an appointment! IMO, make one to be the first there when they open. took about 2.5 hours to do mine because of the crystalline (wish they told me this, i was stuck there with nothing to do). They did about 10 other cars while I waited (some porsches too, new). call and get a quote , tell them you want 3m crystalline. if he gives you less than what I paid, great! if not, PM me and Ill scan my receipt so you can get the same price... or at least bargain for it)

This is the first time I ever tint a car, but their service was good.Could have covered a bit better, i didnt know tint required so much water! i had just detailed the car ! their yelp reviews speak for themselves I suppose.

Do you know which % you're going to go with? I told the guy i wanted 50%, but he kept saying 35 looks better on a black car. I didnt want to look like a banger with everything black, so I kept to 50%

When they finish, theyll ask you to inspect it, and show you the 3M logo prints on the tint to confirm that its the real stuff, then theyll wipe it off

I've had several of my previous cars tinted and, most of the times, they don't cover the interior enough and leave a bit of mess everywhere.
a very good installer would cover everything properly and leave not much mess afterwards - I've seen this only once!!!
I'm gonna go with 40% - this is what I have on my A4 and perfect for my taste....maybe 50% depending on the shade and color.
I'll let you know how much they quote me tomorrow.

I can hear it a bit, but mostly I'd say I FEEL it thru the gas pedal. Like a wound up spring going "kkkkink...kkkkinkk". FWIW I did not see this on my 2011 and my guess is it has something to do with the new electric assist steering rack on the 2013 models. It bugs me a bit when it happens but once I've felt it once or twice on the first little turns it disappears. Not too concerned about it.

Bugs the shit out of me. I'm 500 miles from my 5000 mile service and I'm gonna have the dealer tech drive mine, and a new S5 on the lot, (Ones there at the moment), and compare them.

I think it has to do with the new crown gear they have in the 2013 Fwd. Diff.

Still sucks.

Ugh, that would be frustrating even if I knew it was normal. Mine drags/squeals now and then which I hear and feel in the wheel but it only on sealcoated asphalt.

I doubt if there is anything to worry about. My 2005 S4 has "groaned" during steering lock ever since I bought it.

Possibly what you are hearing is the power steering fluid bypassing when at full lock. This is quite normal for many cars.

We have electric assisted steering on the 2013's, thus no PS fluid. When I turn the wheel sitting still, no noise/shudder. As soon as I start to move, the shudder begins. Foot off the pedal, no noise, apply the gas slightly again, shudder returns. It's coming from the drive train in front.

This is normal behavior of the Quattro. I already complained at the dealer when i got it, they assured me it's normal.

If you go really slow you cant hear it, it's when you go faster you hear it. Only at full turn.

fyi, my 2008 A4 Quattro doesn't have such behavior.
