Stupid Question : T vs Supercharged?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Why does Audi badge the S4 as a 6.0T when it's not a turbocharged car? Forgive my noob status here...

I almost want to correct this, but instead I'm just going to call out a brain fart. I know it's V6... not 6L... just wasn't thinking while I was typing.

Re: Stupid Question : T vs Supercharged?

Someone can probably come in with actual facts but I'm pretty sure I remember reading something where Audi said all forced induction cars would be designated with a "T" from now on. Makes no sense to me tho and removing those badges was the first thing I did.

    Correct.

Audi has said all forced induction vehicles will be branded as "TFSI". Agree that it's absolutely stupid and someone deserves a punch in the mouth for that.

2.0T, 3.0T, 4.0T all have the same bore and stroke, all forced induction.

Superchargers are better in my opinion, but the turbo application works wonders on the new 4.0

T is forced induction of any sort.

They were left over from the 2.7T. Audi decided to use them up rather than put SC badge on. You now have the option of buying the supercharged badges(how absurd paying extra for badges from the factory) OR getting the V6T badging. OR just take the damn things off altogether

I will say that totally gone did look nice when I took the V6 T off... but after paying WAY TOO MUCH for the supercharged badges... yeah, they went on.

When forced induction start to apears on aircraft engines at the beginning of the 20th century, all forced induction system where called supercharger. There was the mechanical superchargers like the belt driven on some cars and the turbo superchargers. Through the years, probably for simplicity, the mechanical one's became superchargers and the turbo one's became turbochargers.

Off topic: The Rolls Royce Merlin engine, V12 and 27 liters of displacement, had a 2 speed mechanical supercharger. There was also some engines with turbo compound. That was not a forced induction system. It was to take advantage of every bit of energy they could. Turbines were in the exhaust system and coupled to the crankshaft by a drive shaft and gears. The turbines were catching the energy of the exhaust gazes and transferring it to the propeller.

I know. That doesn't explain why Audi choose to designated them by the letter T but I just want to share.

Dash next time use the edit button when you make a mistake or in this case the back space button.

As some have pointed out Audi decided to keep the T for force induction engines regardless of the source (turbocharged or supercharged) also they are comfortable with the T moniker because the engine is a TFSI (Turbo fuel stratified injection) therefore technically not wrong but silly as far as I'm concerned. The Supercharged badge looks much better and corrects this!

There was also a rumour, back around early 2010 and google is still not my friend on this one, where the "T" stood for a German expression (that the expression was true or not I'm no German so I dont know) that ment compressed/forced air.

The thing I'm trying to find out is the expression but all I have now is no results and no time but lets put it this way; Audi found another way to have us talking about them... great marketing technique if you ask me.

Yeah, you need to replace the whole body panel IIRC.

I suggest heating it with a hair dryer before removal -- softens the glue and it's easier to remove.

I also use dental floss (mint optional). I also had success using two plastic collar stays. Use one to "slice" the glue and a second to protect the paint from the corner of the emblem opposed to the corner I am working on. If you are gonna try to mongo the emblem off even after heating it, as you pry it up the opposite side can dig into the paint. collar stay works perfectly. Just sayin.

Cant stress this enough... heat up the badges with a hair dryer before attempting to peel them off. I didn't do this when I did mine and learned the hard way.

If you don't heat it up and just use floss it will leave a bunch of tacky foamy residue that is a PITA to remove. I tried to remove the residue with Goo Gone but it only helped slightly. When I was done I discovered that I scratched up the clear coat surface pretty bad (only visible under direct light when looking for it) and had to have the paint corrected which took a lot of work to bring back to a factory finish.

Also, WD-40 works well to break down the adhesive after the removal. Just make sure to clean it very well after.

The best way I have found was to use a Pinstripe removal wheel on a drill to get rid of the residue and causes NO damage to paint as long as you keep the drill moving and not heat up one spot too much. My brother owns a body shop and gave me a wheel. Took all the badges off my Evo when I had it and never messed up the paint...and that car has awful paint, no clear coat either.
