    Backup Camera Calibration

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Long story short, my camera was calibrated about two months ago, and it took 3 hours. Wanting to save myself that hassle in the future, I recorded the pertinent numbers (info from http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index...ial_Procedures ). After finally getting my front parking sensors working and associated module installed, I checked the values, and they were off from what I recorded, so I changed them. The problem is, now it's showing that my camera isn't calibrated, and the procedure is not working. When I get to the part about

Block 130 Field 3 (Calibration Status)
    Specification: 0x0000 (Calibration Successful)
    [Done, Go Back]

it shows instead 0x0003 [something about unsuccessful, or uncalibrated]

Field 1 shows that it's not ready to be calibrated. Am I missing something? Is the procedure different because I've got the front sensors?

I'm bringing it in tomorrow to get protection cleared for my new MMI, anyway so I could try to get them to just tell it it's calibrated, but I don't want it to turn into a 3 hour process again.

you're not going to be able to do it unless you have the proper VAS tools or make a fake version of it... long story short, you're going to have to pay to calibrate the camera again. (i've had it done a couple of times through the dealer and they've always charged me one hour.)

So the camera needs to "see" the calibration board to work?

yes, with out it the system will never accept a calibration.

a few people have made ones from cardboard boxes and other material... look for VAS 6350... it looks like this:

i learned this by accident when i was adjusting settings on my Q7 after lowering it.

i am not sure if it is part of the procedure for the b8 a4 but when the Q7 gets an alignment they recalibrate the camera as well.

here are the instructions if you get your hands on the tool or make one:

it happened to me before, and the dealer wasnt able to calibrate it as i changed the coding of the parking module. and the dealer wants an extra hour of labor to recode the whole car back to factory and then calibrate it.

Really? I took your custom made pdf and went to fedex. Told them to put it on architect type paper and as shown in the photos about 60 inchs from the center of the back tire and changed value of one and away it went.

No issues. Total calibration time took about 4 mins.

Oh and I was gonna mention aswell since I was tinkering and that's what reset the calibration the previous setting were still there. So I just changed the run value to run and just converted the distance already there from mm to inchs (which was right under 60) and let it run. Hope this helps

Got the calibration to work on my 2013 A4 (B8.5) as follows:

    1) the distance from the center of the rear wheel to the edge of the calibration board, as well as the height of the calibration board must be spot on.
    2) the axle width must match your car - this was the key to get the calibration to work!

    My steps:

    1) Place the calibration sheet printed from gab696's pdf above (big thanks!) 51.5" behind your car. The measurement is from the center of your rear wheel to the leading edge of the calibration sheet.

    2) Run VCDS and choose
    [6C - Back-Up Camera]
    [Security Access - 16]
Enter 22351, to enable the adaptation.

    3) [Adaptation - 10]
Channel 005
[Read]
save a value of 500 as the paper for me was on the ground
    [Test]
[Save]

    Channel 004
[Read]
save a value of 15872 for the A4 with the calibration sheet 51.5" behind rear wheel
    ( 20000 - 2820 - 1308 = 15872mm ) --> (base measure - axle width - distance from rear wheel)
    [Test]
    [Save]

    Channel 001
    [Read]
save a new value of 1 (this tells your car to calibrate)
    [Test]
[Save]

    [Done, Go Back]

    4) Now double check the calibration status.
    [Meas. Blocks - 08]
Select Block 130
[Go!]

Block 130 Field 3 (Calibration Status)

Specification: 0x0000 (Calibration Successful)

    [Done, Go Back]

[Close Controller, Go Back - 06]

    5) Scan for codes. If calibration is unsuccessful then the measure you took above are incorrect. Realign the target paper behind your car and try again.

wow this is pretty cool; great info. I never new the backup cameras even needed calibration, but I suppose it makes sense that those "guide lines" would need to be calibrated if one lowered the car. Is that the only situation where it makes sense to recalibrate? I'm not suspecting that small alignment changes would really make that much difference.

Ironically I think it's actual for the perspective of the camera also. My TL has a very fishbowl reverse appearance while my A5 looks more true to perspective with minimal distortion. And yeah really cool.

I had to do the calibration as I tried to get the camera to shutoff as soon as I shifted out of reverse. Messed something up when I changed the code in [6c] from 1001008 to 1003008 (aarg I should have read the post better) as my guidelines are missing. Changing back did not resolve the issue and I threw 2 codes, this calibration being one of them.

I now have the camera working well however my guidelines are missing and I have this second code:

    03110 - Active Steering Control Module (J792)
    004 - No Signal/Communication
    Freeze Frame:
    Fault Status: 01100100
    Fault Priority: 6
    Fault Frequency: 3
    Reset counter: 99
    Mileage: 48442 km
    Time Indication: 0
    Date: 2014.06.15
    Time: 10:36:06

    Freeze Frame:
    Term 15 On
    Reverse OFF
    Count: 3

Any help resolving would be appreciated!

So now I have just the above code, backup camera and acoustic sensors working but guidelines missing. Not the end of the world but want to get it resolved.

So I have checked this again and selected [44 - Steering Assist], Coding, Byte 1, Dropdown to [01 - Park Steering Assist Installed/Active] but no joy. Also the 03110 - Active Steering Control Module (J792), 004 - No Signal/Communication is still showing. I'm thinking of taking it into the dealer for a look.

    Any ideas before I do??

Sorry to be a bit off topic, but this is the most informative post I've seen about the rear camera.

Anyone have any idea how to fix the rear acoustic beep? Mine stopped all of a sudden and I don't want to go to the Dealer.

I know this is an old thread - thanks for all the information and the PDF of the calibration template. I retrofitted my 2010 A6 with the OEM rear camera and got it all working. I was able to print it at Staples on their black and white "engineering printer" for $10. Worked perfectly with these directions. Thanks!

Hey guys, this is awesome information, thanks! I have clicked on all the link for the calibration board/template however all of them do not work/want to install things before I can download. Could someone post the file (ideally pdf) that can be downloaded without a problem/install new software? Thanks in advance!

Worked great for my 2012 A7. I let VCDS pick the channel and helped create the values also. Didn't work the first time because I hadn't fully trimmed the plotter paper. Once I did that, it worked like a charm. Which got my adaptive cruise working since, for whatever reason, it relies on the rear camera being properly calibrated.
