How is the used A5 market, looking to dump my car?

I have a 2011 A5 Premium Plus that I am getting ready to dump. Has about 19k miles on it and is in great condition. Any ideas what to expect?

NADA, KBB, Edmunds, etc are all in the $36k-$38k range for trade and $40k retail.

Hoping to dump this thing on an A6 or maybe an A7.

Is there a CarMax in your area? Spend 20 minutes there getting a quote. That will be thousands more than any dealer will give you and not too far off what you could sell it for. When I sold my Rover, they gave me $4k more than any dealer would. They use real world retail data, not just auction prices like the dealer.

That's debatable. I received a quote of 1500 less from a CarMax than from a dealer for my car.

I refuse to deal with carmax. They are scam artists.

Carmax will try and tear you a new one everytime. I have laughed at them before. And their no haggle BS pisses me off. Not how I do business. These are very desirable cars. Privately sell and put a few extra grand in your pocket. I don't care how sweet the dealers make a deal look. They will twist number to make you feel good about the purchase. You can always do much better on your own.

Maybe Carmax is shady when buying a car from them but again they will pay more than a dealer nearly every time. Like I said. 4k is in my pocket. Not the dealer. That's real world experience. Only reason I even went is the GM of the local Mercedes dealership said Carmax buys used cars for more than Mercedes will sell them. So instead of just turning in a leased car. I sold it to Carmax and made 4k a since they payed me more than my payoff. Which was 4k more than anyone else. Funny. The wife even said we should buy it back since it needed about 4k in work lol. Brakes, service, etc. all done by them before they can sell it.

Thanks jrhone, I have dealt with carmax before and I said never again. They tried to screw me over when I sold my Wolfsburg. Car was worth $16,500 all day long and they offered me $10,500 and said they might go as high as $11k if I bought a new car from them at sticker price. Ended up selling the car for $18k when I did some research.

Do your research. Just throwing that out there. Book value on my rover was 46. Payoff was 43. All dealers offered 43 in trade. Some as low as 41 and were throwing the difference on top of the car. Carmax offered 47 cash for the car. Mannheim prices were 43. That's what the dealers were offering. I'm sure it depends on the car and the Carmax and other market circumstances. Now I said just get an estimate didn't say actually sell the car to them. I took that quote and got the range rover dealer to match it because Carmax can't buyout some leases. Again that same dealer was only offering 43 IF I bought a new rover. 41 outright.

The used car market is pretty strong and prices are actually high. There is a shortage of decent slightly pre-owned cars. Due to harsh economic times less people bought new over the past few years and those that did are holding onto their cars rather than upgrading as frequently. Its a great time to trade in a car that can be certified, plus most dealers are willing to deal on new purchases.

However, people are still out to make money. The initial offer on a trade will be black book auction value. With a 2011 A5 Tip you should be able to get a decent trade though. Its a car the dealer could certify or Carmax could sell easily. Thing with Carmax is they're in the business of buying/selling slightly preowned excellent condition cars. If you have that, they will almost always offer more than the dealer, however if its an older car, modded, had body damage, ect...their offer will be far closer to dealer offers.

If you have navigation, its should be selling for $37-38K at a used dealer

and private party sales should fetch $35-36K.

I would say I search for an A5 on almost daily on weekdays. These prices have been more or less the same for the last 6 months.

One example was an 09 Tacoma I had. They offered $21k, dealer offered $23.5k and I sold privately for $26.5k. I cannot afford not to sell on my own. Many say I don't want to go to the trouble. For $3k-$6k its worth the trouble. That's a shit ton of mod money

Thats the truth. Dealer quoted my 2006 BMW 750i sport with 25k miles on it for $24k i almost fainted. Sold for $34k.... HUGE difference always sell privately never trade
