    A5 Reliability & questions

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Currently cross-shopping several models, of which the A5 with 3.2 auto is included. Current DD is a B6 S4 and wondering how the reliability of the A5 compares. I put about 1000 miles/month on. Looking at a couple low mileage cars right now, one with 41.5K and the other with 18.5K and CPO. Is it a model that one should have an extended warranty for? Both are fully loaded and priced low to mid-30's. How much price negotiation is possible? The low mileage one has the cinnamon brown interior which is "different" considering the exterior is dark blue. I'll post photos later, if req'd for an assessment. Thanks.

I could be corrected, but have been told the carbon build up on the 3.2 is worse than the 2.0t.... Just curious why not get a 2.0t & tune it to 330 torque? In my opinion it will be a much more fun car than the 3.2 and get better gas mileage as well. I am also in a b6 S4, but am looking to get into a stage 2 A5 2.0t after spending 7 days in one this last week. The torque in the city & the gas mileage won me over

3.2 motor has been around awhile and has been pretty solid motor all the way around. Yes carbon build up has been issue on some. But with you driving a good 1K a month shouldn't have to worry about it much. You can research it.....But most daily drivers that are putting on some miles it isn't an issue most of the time. Mainly an issue for garage queens that see short trips to the store and back with a soft right foot. If the car is getting fully warmed up and enjoy some fun time behind the wheel and carbon issues shouldn't follow you.

A5 hasn't had a whole lot of issues. Some earlier models had an a-arm issue but most of those have been fixed.

You own an Audi now so you know the deal. Your buying a much more complex and higher quality car then Ford Taurus. So expect maintenance and if you need repairs to cost more.

Both cars you should expect at least 1K off and if it isn't already marked down then I'd say more like 1.5K-2K off. Also on both cars check tire condition and type of tires on it. You may need to buy a winter tire set up if you got summer tires on the one buy. Depending on the wheel set up on the car tires can get very expensive quick. Not fun buying a 30K+ car and then three months later dropping 1.5K on tires.

I'm not a fan of modding. Buying one already modded is OK, but it's too much of an inconvenience to my wife taking her to work and stuff like that.

    Good to know.

    Yup, I've had an '83 400Q, an '89 200Q, a '94 S4, and my B6 S4. I'm VERY familiar with maintenance.

I was thinking $1500-$2000 as well. I've always run two set of wheels for summer & winter tires, so I would be looking for a set of AVUS wheels and mount snows.

That's ok if you are not a fan of modding, I just thought the 2.0t would be a better choice for gas mileage and to me personally, is a lot peppier driving around town than the 3.2L.... A tune also only takes 1 hour at a shop to get downloaded... so no real downtime to speak of..

Well, pulled the trigger on this 2010 A5 3.2 Prestige the other day. 22K miles, 20 months of original warranty + 24 months of CPO.

i would recommend the 3.2. if your not into modding like you said. in my opinion, the 2.0T is not a strong motor. it's like the 1.8T, you either get lucky and no problems except small things here and there, or really unlucky and have many problems. Right now, it's known the 2.0T is burning oil. Some people have had their engines rebuilt and still burning oil. Mine had the work done, still trying to find out if its fixed. i put a thread for my car and its problems, and many people tell me i have a lemon but i've heard many people with similar problems as me. if you are getting 6spd, be wary of clutch problems. Many people have "creaking clutches." i've had that creaking clutch, but only randomly in the morning when i just get in my car and then it goes away after a few minutes of driving. The car is comfortable, you may notice a few sounds coming from your cabin (plastic inserts, glove rattles) but i live in new york and the roads are shit. Plus you may want to take a look at this link.

it still blows my mind, how this beautiful car is close to being a complete fuck up by audi lol..
