What are the blank buttons for?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Can you guys help. I am buying a 2013 S4. I would like to know what options I would need to buy in order to fill up the 4 blank buttons in picture. The two live buttons seem to be "drive select" (which has changed from 2012 when it used to include the comfort, auto, dynamic and individual selections too) and some kind of traction control button. What are the 4 blank buttons for (if the appropriate options were purchased)?

I know one of them is for the rear sun shade up/down, one is for the parking sensors off/on, and one of them is for the auto start/stop function.

Thanks JE. im in the UK and getting an Avant so I won't get the rear sun shade. Yes - I will get the start / stop. I think I may have seen another pic with a steering wheel on - what could that be - dynamic steering on / off?

When shopping for VW GTI/Golf R, I noticed a few unused buttons during the test drive. Sales person told me that in Europe car has many more options and those buttons actually do something, but here in states they are just left overs and don't do anything...

You might have seen the auto start/stop button. It's a circular arrow with an "A" inside of it.

Huh, for the low self-esteemed, maybe one could get fake buttons to swap for option deletes....

Or better yet, get buttons that say "Hyperspace" or "Oil Slick"....that would be awesome

The entire left row was supposed to be used for the wide ADS button set. So maybe Audi never planned for it.

I don't think there isn't a button to fill it - even in Europe. See below.

This is correct. The drive select control took up the entire left bank pre facelift. Facelift changed it to a single button and added start/stop - this leaves us with one blank.

Anybody know if you can add a button? I'd love to use a factory one as a mute button for my radar detector.

Great question, I'd like to do the same for my radar as well. The other option I'm looking at is getting a switch from digikey.

It turns off the engine when the car comes to a stop and restarts it as soon as you press the gas to accelerate. It really improves fuel economy but it's not seen too often in North America becuase our fuel economy testing cycles don't take starting and stopping into account; they're contstant speed tests. However, in the EU, they take stopping and starting into account when measuing fuel economy so it really helps to boost fuel economy numbers over there.

Yeah, I looked at varous switches from Digi-key and others, but ultimately installing one means putting a hole in a piece of interior trim, and that's always a risky propisition.

I haven't looked closely but are the blank buttons molded in to the dash piece? I was hoping it was just an insert which could be replaced in case I mess up the blank.

Actually, that button is located right below the Electronic Parking Brake Button. The Circle Start/Stop actually is Silver and does turn the car on and off each time it's depressed, so sirpickles is correct.

A lot of european cars have this. BMW puts it on their cars in North America.

Yeah that's the engine Off/On button. I thought he meant the automatic start/stop function.

I'm not entirely sure. When I looked at the parts catalogue for the 2012s, the assembly was all part of the drive select or traction control assembly with a blank listed for about $25ish IIRC.
I was hoping to use an actual factory button as opposed to messing with an add-on, but that may be the only option other than trying to find a parking brake/auto hill hold assembly.

they are inserts but come in a bank of three buttons only. you can't simply remove one button individually. even the face of the blanks don't pry off. i recently removed mine from my 2013 S4 to add a parking button. as my car is equipped with audi drive select, the esp and rear blinds (i have that option) buttons are located on the right side.

So to add functionaity, you'd need to open the unit up and fiddle with the circuitry as well as the physical access to depress.

Nope. You have to buy the correct bank of buttons with the functions you want. Then you have to add wires to the empty spots on the harness.
