Question Engine Fan Runs After Engine Off, Key Out

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hello!

I have an almost brand-new Audi TDI A3 Premium Plus with under 3K miles.

About a week ago it started to run the fan for an extended time after the car was off and the key out of the ignition. I did not wait for the engine to turn off (waited 5 minutes once) but instead got back in the car and turned the ignition on and then off again and the fan stopped.

After some research it appears this is not an unknown problem.

But before I call my dealer and have them look at it I wanted to run this issue by the forum. Any thoughts, home remedies or convoluted ignition-pedal necromancing?

    Thanks for your time,

    T

Perfectly normal, imho, the fan(s) run after you turn off the engine until the water/engine(?) cools down.

How long does it run? In most cases, the fan will shut off after a minute or two.

Normal. After run fans to bring the coolant/oil/fuel temperatures down.

Engine hot soak is the worst for fuel vaporization which leads to long cranks. Also, fuel vaporization in the high pressure fuel pump bad - fuel is used for lubrication.

    Hi!

I have heard cars run fans before but never as long as this one does - I waited 5 minutes once and it was still going strong when I got in and turned the ignition and then turned it off (which always stops the fan.) Isn't 5 minutes sort of long? Or does one have to get 30 minutes or more to be concerned? Or is even that acceptable?

When the car runs the fan it uses the battery, correct? If so, doesn't a really long fan run (i.e., 30 minutes) constitute a certain danger to a battery staying properly charged in very cold weather?

    Thanks guys!

Seeing you have TDI, I really have no idea how long it should run or if it will drain the battery down.

I would ask the dealer or in a tdi forum (if there is one).

This is absolutely normal for the 2.0T, so I'd imagine its the same for the TDI. My 2009, 2012, and now 2013 all run the fan for as much as 5 minutes depending on how hot the car is when I turn it off. Dealer will tell you its normal. No worries.

I have a 2013 A3 TDi also with about 1200mi on it, my fans run when my car is off too. It eventually stops though, Ive never gone to work in the morning with the fans still running lol! It's definitely to cool the engine down if its too hot, next time try letting your car idle for about 5min (cool the engine down) before you turn off your car and see if the fans still stay on.

A lot of turbo guys use turbo timers to bring the engine temps down before they shut the car off so not to damage the turbo.
