So the volume fluctuations from my Bose Symphony HU were driving me nuts. So I decided to do some digging and this is what I found:
Want the volume fluctuations gone? You must kill what Bose calls AudioPilot. There is a little microphone up in the sunroof console that picks up ambient noise in the cabin, witchcraft happens, and your audio equalizer is adjusted accordingly to sound nice and pretty. Sounds good, doesn't it? I don't think so... IMO, something falls on it's face in the witchcraft stage (especially if you have something like an aftermarket exhaust) and all of a sudden your nice Bose system is a possessed hunk of crap that will blast you with bass one second and practically go silent the next.
I know of two ways to do this:
-One is to simply unplug the microphone under the sunroof console (what I did). This gave me the results I desired, but I also get three quick beeps from my stereo every time I turn my car on (I don't mind it at all)
-Second, you could follow the TSB released by Audi and actually put effort into it (and not get any beeping)

After you do either of these steps, if you so desire, you can perform a vagcom love session with your radio, go to adaptation, channel 66, and activate the speed volume control so you can access it by holding menu on your radio (I hate this too, so I naturally did this step, and promptly returned it back to it's original setting).
-setting channel 66 to '0' allows you to access SVC from the menu of your radio and overall enables speed linked volume on your stereo
-setting channel 66 to '1' keeps SVC from appearing on your radio's menu and from functioning at all (IIRC, this is the default for the 2003 and newer Bose systems that have AudioPilot as part of the system)

After all of this, my question is... to the best of anyone's knowledge, is simply disconnecting the microphone and dealing with a few quiet beeps on start-up any less effective than going through the TSB from Audi?
Hopefully this helps a few people.. it's made it so I can bear using my DICE adapter (still have a wee bit of ground loop noise at high volumes that I can live with). All in all, if you've got a Bose system give it a shot and see if you notice a difference! I finally have consistent audio that I can enjoy! No more volume fluctuations or suddenly booming/non-existent bass!
