    Vinyl wrapping my B7

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So, I've decided to vinyl wrap my car. I am 100% amateur and have only watched YouTube clips. Decided to start with the mirrors since people have said they are super hard. Online people said to start easy with the hood and then move to harder parts. I did it backwards and started hard. Wasted a bit of vinyl but I think I've picked up on it sort of fast.

    Took apart my mirrors

First attempt. Horrible. I had no idea what I was doing. Tried to do the mirror in one piece but the Audi mirrors are impossible to do in one piece.

Did it in 3 pieces. Started with the inside. Then I did the outside inner piece (facing the car) and then the big outer piece. Turned out fantastic. From 5 feet away you can't see the seams.

Looking forward to seeing the whole car done.

After my first attempt I was turned off by it and how tough it will be but it really requires patience and it is sort of an art to do it properly.

Pretty stoked about the final product.

I'll keep this thread updated with my progress. I bought 100 feet. I'm not going to post prices because I got it locally from a distributer and he doesn't want people buying it directly from him so my price won't be a good gauge of how much it costs.

Car is going to be matte silver. The colour is a bit different than the factory colour. So far Im happy.

If my distibutor had digital desert camo I would have done that but he didnt.

    This is my inspiration

Very ballsy move doing the whole car on your own. Are you just trying to save cost or do you just actually want to do it yourself? At any rate, I can't wait to follow along with the thread. I've been a big fan of the vinyl myself and love working with it too. You did a great job on the mirrors thus far

Thanks! I just wanted to give it a shot. A buddy of mine at work wanted to do his Fusion in matte black so I agreed to do my car too. It should be a fun experience.

Still trying to figure out how to take everything apart properly (like the little plastic rails that go between the A pillar piece and the roof and run from the windshield to the back window). If the rain stays away I was going to give the hood a shot today. We'll see how it goes.

Thanks. The 350 looks tough to do.

I'm motivated to get this done though. Should be good.

I think you should vinyl wrap it to match this:

On a serious note, you've got guts wrapping your own car. I don't have the patience to do such a thing.

The car will be patchy but I dont have a lot of spare time so it will be one panel at a time and I'll do it in all of my off moments.

Today I have to swap to my winter wheels though since one tire isnt holding air and two are corded and my tire shipment comes in on Tuesday (even though I ordered last Monday). I thought I was going to be able to make it but I dont think my car will make it to Tuesday.

Im going to try to do my hood today though. Just hoping the rain holds out

A few tip that will help you:

    - If you don't have an enclosed space DO NOT do it.
    - clean your car really really good before, I would use a clay bar too. The slightest dirt under will show up.
    - clean the garage really good before, vacuum to get rid off as much dust you can, spray the air with water really really good in the hole place so any dust in the air will go to floor, try to keep the floor a a bit wet/humid during the process spraying water in the air from time to time. you can use a Febreeze spray bottle.
    - spray water on the surface before you set the vinyl foil, this will help you move it, lift it if you need to. You can spray lot of water, this will go out when you set the vinyl with the special tool. Even if there's small amounts of water left under, this will to away.
    - you will need to stretch the vinyl a lot in some places so a heat gun will be helpfull.
    - do not start doing wthis without the help of a friend

these are very good tips. Follow these tips! Each vinyl has a different type of application as some are "wet""air release" etc.. If you don't have a heat gun, buy one. I suppose on the youtube videos they tell you what you need to do.

From experience, wrapping a vehicle takes lots of patience!!! You could in theory wrap the whole car in a day, but if you want it done correctly I would encourage you not to rush it. Some pieces you will not be able to do in one whole piece, but I would say 90% of the car you can without a problem. This will be a fun, but very stressful learning experience I can guarantee it.

I'm sure I speak for most of us, post updates!

Thanks guys. I think parts of Isaac hit us today. Loads of rain. I gave up.

Whenever I get a chance I'll continue. I might have to redo my mirrors. I didn't use the 3M adhesive promoter and the edges peeled up a bit.

It's a really good learning experience. I will post updates while I go.

wrapping a car seems like a nightmare scenario for me.

even trying to lamin-x my taillights last summer stressed me out (that lasted one week in case you were wondering since it didn't look clean to me; and bubbles everywhere).

Kudos to you for attempting this, I just don't have the patience and I am a DIY guy all the way. I found it annoying to just warp my window trim and I just ripped it all off after a few weeks because of the one "unsightly" seam (super anal) I had on each rear quarter.

I think a must for your car when the vinyl is done is to either vinyl wrap the chrome on your grille to matte black and put matte black vinyl on the roof and either vinyl wrap the chrome or get the titanium trim. Also, matte black trim for your mirrors would have complemented your setup well. Just my .02 cents.

Money, not so bad. Id say close to 500 for the vinyl, glue, tools etc.

Time. A lot. By the time Im done it will be more.

And I suggest having a lot of friends and beer.

props to you to have the balls to do this. I would love to go matte white as well, even though I'm already white. Keep up the good work! Get all the large easy areas out of the way. Hardest parts are going the be the front bumper and the shark fin area. Good luck!

My first attempt at mirrors was like 6 hours for one. Then in changed how I was doing it and it took me an hour a side and turned out better.

For the hood yesterday with cleaning and applying it took 4 hours.

I'm guessing ill improve as time goes on.
