Clean your blades. Seems like there is some sort of buildup on them.

Besides simply water and a clean microfiber, 303 Wiper treatment does the trick as well.

Try washing the windsheild. Run a clay bar over it see if there is anything weird lurking on it.

It could still be the blades...and realistically, even if it is residual gunk on the windshield, the blades are now affected.

Try a good quality glass cleaner (i.e. Einszett) at full-strength, or a good APC diluted 2:1 (water:cleaner)...do NOT use Simple Green, which is neither. Use on both the windshield and the blades.

FWIW, I'm not a big fan of using a clay bar on windshields. The clay can fill any pits or chips in the glass, which will create a similar problem to the one you're trying to solve. However, you can certainly use a chemical (i.e. metal polish) or even abrasive (paint polish) on the glass, and follow with a stiff nylon brush to ensure you've cleaned out the pits/chips. That said, I suspect a good cleaning will do the trick, and would certainly start there before escalating.

x2 If it's definitely not the wipers, then this could be the culprit.

I always have used a good glass sealant, so I rarely use my wipers anyways.

    Hey Jerry,
What's the deal with Simple Green? I use it in my engine bay and on my wheels, and as far as I can tell, it works great. Bad idea?

IME it leaves a filmy residue that is really difficult to remove. There are just so many better cleaners out there...FWIW, my go-to is Meguiar's APC. Poorboys Bio-APC is good too, although doesn't seem quite as powerful.

Heard that! I tried to wipe down my stove top with SG and it smeared a film all over it.

I wonder if it's an issue with the lamination?

Ok...stupid question, but here goes: you're 100% sure that's on the outside? Looks very similar to what I experienced when I bought my car. Ended up cleaning the interior side with APC to get rid of it, and it still came back. Ultimately, I used this...

...even though I hadn't noticed any odors. I can't say for sure if that was the final fix, or my last round with APC, but it's much better.

If it is indeed on the exterior, which of the suggestions above have you tried?

Jerry, yes its on the exterior side. I can tell and I know this because when the water beads it does it around the areas that have the residue. I will be claying and then using an orbital polisher with glass polish this weekend. Hopefully that'll get what ever the hell that is out of my windshield.

Gotcha...good luck with everything. (One more Captain Obvious moment....don't forget to clean the blades as well.)

Use No Touch Auto Glass Stripper. Takes some elbow grease, but it will get your glass clean, including removing silicone residue (which may be your problem if you ever got anything like Armor All on your windshield). I used this to remove Rain-X which went all smeary on my old car.

    WalMart, few bucks a bottle.

This looks similar to the water spot issues that I had due to very hard water. I user Stoner's Invisible Glass and it took care of it. I have heard that the glass on our cars is fairly soft and prone to pitting and other marring. Recently I've noticed tiny pits on my glass that have occurred from stones kicked up looks like road rash....my front end looks the same!

Might also not be a bad idea to wash the windshield with dish soap (cheap alternative to an auto glass stripper). Dish soap usually strips off any oil, wax, or any other substance that may be lingering on the windshield.

I have tried so many glass cleaners and right now Einszett is my favorite. Adam's glass cleaner was the worst. If you don't buff it just right, it leaves a white haze. And even when you do buff it right, it gets hazy in a week.
