New law that is almost passed in NY. Now your car cannot pass inspection if you have window tint.

Looks like NY is going the way NJ went a few years ago. No problem for me, I know placed where I can pass and I have a DMV approved note but still a problem for 75% of the people who have window tints. At least in NJ you could tint the rear windows, in NY you cannot even tint those. The whole "protects the cop" statement is 100% BS, if someone wanted to harm the cop, tinted/no tint would not stop them.In my area you pay 30k taxes, have absolute shit roads, insane tolls, insane gas ($4.57 for premium), useless cops, etc, etc.

Time to register the cars out of state.

I disagree. I think it makes an officers job much safer. With tints its extremely difficult to see into the back of a car even if the spot light is shined. The officer cannot see who or how many people are in the vehicle. He cannot see hands etc etc...

Well if thats the case, why is the rear windshield permitted to be tinted at any % of darkness?

So why do I still get tickets when i get pulled over and all my windows are down, including sunroof open, lights inside the car on and hands clearly visible on wheel?

I agree with the above statement of it being a bunch of bs. More like $ making

Also please enlighten me what makes undercover police cruisers and other vehicles so special and exempt from the law? It's still a car, classified as a passenger vehicle. So wtf.

^ one, its for the their privacy, hence i have no issue with them being tinted.

also, i have never gotten tint tickets when i have rolled down the windows, shut the car off, dropped the keys on the dash, and tapped the dome light. not ever.

most cops arent out specifically to give you a tint ticket.

Surely it won't be a problem to pass inspection if you pay some shops off or are close with the shop that's doing the inspection in the first place.. No real way to enforce it.

Sucks for most though, just more stuff to worry about. Good thing I've never had tints.

You must encounter some nice cops. I got pulled over for JUST tint, and I have a LEGAL NOTE to have tint, cop gave me a ticket for 2 windows and even gave me a ticket for having a NYPD highway patrol PBA sticker on the windshield. I was courteous very polite throughout the entire encounter. Most cops are dicks.

Umm..... Yea they are. When I had my a4 waiting at a red light in the city, I saw a cop pass perpendicular to my position and I saw him look my direction. I made the turn after green and then saw that same cop pulling me over....... For tint.

The current tint law excludes commercial limos, and SUVS/Minivans that come with tint from the factory. Whats funny is that no other state has such strict laws.....the inspection nonsense they are starting is just ridiculous.

This dude was a straight up dick. I have no front plate because someone backed into me and my holder broke, so I use 3M tape and that day it fell off due to the rain, I showed him the plate with the tape residue and he still wrote it up along with a 75/55. The 75/55 WAS A GUESS because the van in front was doing 75 so he said I must have been doing the same! He said he only pulled me over was because he saw the dark tint (only back windows were up) *The other car did not get my attention like your car did*. About to be 30 days and no supporting deposition, should be able to get it dismissed easy or at the least reduced to 0 pts.

This law is not going to stop people from driving cars with tinted windows or from getting tints once the law is out. Just find an inspection place that will pass you with tints and that it. People still passed inspection when they introduced those "dyno's". The place just ended up putting another car in its place. Now they got rid of the dyno and they use the obd2 port to make sure you have no CEL. That didn't stop shops from finding a way around it.

New tinted window law in NY

I don't see a problem with a light tint, yeah it's still illegal..but most people love to put on limo like tints then they wonder why they get stopped. I love how u guys want your "privacy"..thats why you have a home. What could you possibly be doing in your car you don't want others to see? Pick your nose? Or Smash in an alley... Some towns strictly enforce the tint rule, others not so much. It depends where you go..and as us being B5 S4 owners..our cars naturally attract attention..tints jus add to the fire...and as far as safety..even with lights on, windows down if u have dark tints in the rear window it's difficult to see who's in the car...I say this from personal experience...sometimes u just run into cops who are having a bad day..everyday.

Not everyone wants light tints. Some cars dont look good with it. If you have a light colored interior you want darker tints. I personally always had dark tints on all my cars since the late 90s. Lightest tint ever was 25%. On my s4 i had 5%. In 14 years of driving I've never gotten pulled over for tints.

Two of my buddies are professional tinters with their own shops and they both told me that most tints they remove are from cars with light tints. I think cops pick on the lighter tints more because it looks like they're trying to be legal and if you have really dark tints you must know someone with a pba card or have a family member on the force.

That's absolutely the most idiotic statement I've ever heard. Cops pull over people with tints light or dark because ultimately they're both illegal. In your case you've been lucky not getting stopped or ticketed.

You making that statement about cops not pulling over people with dark tints is absurd if a cop sees someone doing 90+ on a highway..he doesn't think well since he's speeding he must have a PBA card or must be a cop. He's going to stop them either way and investigate. If he is a cop or has a PBA the driver might get a pass.

There's a lot of misconception and bias opinions towards officers.

New tinted window law in NY

I know from reliable sources that 90% of all NYPD patrol cars have light meters. It's easy money for the city. In addition, they can cite you per window, so if they're (NYPD) in a bad mood you could theoretically get 4 tiny violations in one stop.

PBA cards are pretty much useless these days, as they're openly sold on eBay. These days, you really need something with a verifiable number on it and/or know the proper "pulled over" procedure and lingo.

As much as we dislike the tint laws, we gotta put ourselves in the officers shoes. If I pulled over a vehicle with dark tint, I would definitely have my hand on my firearm. I would like to go home at the end of my shift.

Otherwise, you gotta pay to play.

NYPD cops are total pricks. Most of the bs meter maids are the worst. dont know shit but walk around with a pad and pen and think they are the boss of the world. i once get ticketed for standing in the side of a street at 5 am with NO CARS ANYWHERE. i was leaving work andw aiting for a coworker to come down. i even offered to move the car and the meter maid completely ignored me. she didnt say one word to me and i was just speaking to a wall.

dont know where these people get off.

i have thought for a long time to start recording police officers and vehicles doing illegal stuff. i see it all the time. They have no right to ignore stop signs, red lights, tint laws or anything else if the public has to follow all these laws so strictly. i see cops all the time go through reds just cause they dont feel they have to wait like everyone else. but if i go through a yellow i get ticketed out the ass.... these people need a reality check.

Some definitely do take advantage at times..but just because they go through a red light without light doesn't mean he's not busy. Some patrol cars go through red lights with no lights or sometimes turn the lights on then off and continue. This happens because we Sometimes they get called and it isn't that important enough to speed through town with lights n sirens...but it's Something that needs attention

There's a big difference between driving around with tints and speeding. You don't get points on your license or go to jail for having tints. But if you can for speeding. Yes maybe I was lucky but for the past 14-15 years but that's a lot of luck. I have few other friends with really dark tints and as far as I know none of them got pulled over for it in several years.

Those guys that use those PBA cards that you can buy on ebay are complete idiots. You have to KNOW the person that gave you the card, know their phone number and having the badge number on it proves that is not fake if they decide to call up to verify.

Should be illegal to pass red lights in that situation. I almost got rammed by a cop doing a good 60mph or so on Coney Island Ave in brooklyn......I had the green and he had the red, and it was on solid, so i wasnt trying to speed across to "just make it", a little faster and i would of been done.

Not a good enough excuse in my opinion. Let's face it, if you're a cop in the city or anywhere else, you will be able to get away with more shit than a person that doesnt work for the force. Go look at your local precinct's parking lot and see how many of those private vehicles have dark tint. I wonder how many of them get a ticket for it.

How often do people get stopped just for the tints? I bet that for a lot of people, tint ticket is just another ticket on top of whatever they were originally stopped for. And yes, I also think it's a bit unfair to compare rural areas to NYC - tints in a small city where everyone knows you and your car is completely different from a huge city where cops have no idea what to expect from the driver/passengers.

    More often than you think.
I've been pulled over for tint alone multiple times with my previous cars, and my brother was recently pulled over just for that alone aswell. All in NYC. has not happened anywhere else, knock on wood.

I'm not doubting that cops get away..but honestly..its a perk of the job. If you work at a strip club u get to see tits for free..if you work for a cable company you can find a way to get free cable. Im not saying it right or wrong..but there are certain things that you get with the job

All this talk about 'perks of the job' is all B.S. as far as I am concerned. As a L.E.O, you are no less accountable. If any thing, you are to be held to a higher standard of the law which you profess to protect.

Now back on topic: as for that douche-bag PO and his partner that gave me those tint tickets the other day, perhaps he was having a bad day, had to make his 'quota for the week', whatever. It was totally unnecessary! Btw, I had my windows all rolled down; I had to bring 'em up for him to use this tint-meter. So, why/how did he make the decision to pull me over? Perhaps the car I was driving? As far as I am concerned, they are all pricks! All of 'em!

New tinted window law in NY

It may be unfair or bullshit but honestly its REALITY.

If u didn't notice..your rear windshield doesn't go down thus givin probable cause to pull you over. He suspected tints all throughout the car. Did he have to give u a ticket? Absolutely not, was he having a bad day or told by his superiors to give out more tint tickets..it's very likely.

Sucks, that you think their all "pricks" but next time you need help..whether your car gets broken into/stolen or you or a family member has an emergency remember those "pricks" will be the first one to help u no matter the circumstances . How many people do you know that will take a bullet for a stranger? Look around..every LEO on the job will.

    Good Day to you sir.

I think that law shouldn't be passed. I think the law should make us roll all or windows down whenever we are pulled over by a P.O. I have a few friends that are officers and this is what they all have told me to do, also to turn on the domelight if it is @ night and to leave your hands and any passengers hands visible @ all times. Since I've been told this i've been pulled over multiple times but only ticketed once for a loud exhaust by a rookie, wasted part of my day but that ticket got through out.
    OEM + work in progress
