    ABS and ESP light on (after replacing sensor)

    Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Ok. First off, I've been having intermittent issues with the ABS / ESP light turning on followed by speedo that stops working. So I had it scanned and found out that the left front wheel speed sensor was the culprit. After replacing the sensor with an aftermarket part, while on idle, the ESP light would stay on, the speedo needle moving up and down, then followed by the ABS light and eventually speedo needle stops moving and working. How can I get this cleared and fixed? Any ideas? TIA.

    you'll need to get your car looked at via VAG-COM, but it sounds like your ABS is about to take a dump on you my audi friend. Mine used to do the same thing.

    Brake light switch? Might be worth a try, as it's very easy to do, and inexpensive.

    Not a brake light switch. When mine went out I got no error lights. Just brake lights staying on and no cruise control. Sounds like a bad ABS module. Check my old thread for info.

    I beg to differ. When the brake light switch went bad on my wife's Avant, the symptoms were the ESP light coming on intermittently when starting up, and intermittent loss of throttle response for seconds at a time. I didn't say that it couldn't be the ABS module, I just said it would be smart to try a simple fix like this first. YMMV.

    Thanks for the replies so far. The car was scanned via VAG-COM which led me to find the problem which was the front left wheel speed sensor. I don't think it's the brake light switch b/c I had that happen once and I know the indicator of that is usually the rear brake lights staying on even after depressing the brake pedal. The problem with mine this time was, after replacing the wheel speed sensor, the ABS and ESP light stay on as compared to prior to the replacement, the ABS/ESP light would come on sporadically. I'm thinking b/c the sensor is an aftermarket may be causing the light to come on, ya?

    Swap the sensors from left to right on the front. Clear codes and see if it comes back or if it shows up on the right front sensor. If it comes back as a left front sensor even after it being switched, its more than likely the ABS module. If it doesn't come back or it says the rights out... you know its the aftermarket sensor.

    One thing I missed out....I haven't cleared the fault code since replacing the sensor...Could this cause why the problem still exists after replacing the sensor?

    So I had the ABS module rebuilt, thinking it would be my last hope to get this darn issue fixed. So I received the rebuilt module, from cheapabs.com, (Very quick turn around, btw. Highly recommend) but the problem is still there. After re-install, the ESP light came on followed by ABS light after a couple of seconds, then remained on. I drove it around the block a couple of times, but to no avail. What else do I need to do?!?!?

    Did you pull the brake switch out and see if it was sticking at all? I know that you replaced it awhile back, but it might be worth checking again.

    I have similar issue with my 2003 A4 1.8T. Code indicated wheel sensor so I had that replaced. Code still comes back.

    00290 - ABS Wheel Speed Sensor; Rear Left (G46)
    30-10 - Open or Short to Plus - Intermittent

    I've had a shop check the wiring from the ABS module to the sensors, checked the sensors, checked the ABS selector rings. Everything checks out. Next step for me would be to replace the ABS control module however a new one I'm told is like over $2000. A refurb/rebuilt one would be $300. However, sounds like that did not solve your problem. Mann...this problem blows considering the resale value of the car is not much anymore.

    ^Generally ABS systems do a self check at start up, and if everything like sensors is good, light will stay off.

    I'm sure he's getting:
    00283 – Front Left ABS Wheel Speed Sensor (G47)
    30-10 – Open or Short to Plus – Intermittent

    Since he said it was his front left wheel sensor. Mine will act up on start up, and can be reset by restarting, but will randomly turn the lights on at any dead stop. So it's not the self check atleast for me.

    I'm sorry to hear the rebuild didn't fix this because that's my next route. Heres my battle Clicky!

    I am getting ready to replace the module next week, so this post scares me a little :(

    If the ABS light is on, there is a code stored. Plain and simple. No need to guess what the problem could be. The light is on in reference to a very specific (if sometimes puzzling) diagnostic trouble code. Read code, diagnose, repair.

    This condition isn't so easily diagnosed by the code. Mine throws the code on the speed sensor, however 2 shops have looked at it and its not the speed sensor. Even had it replaced. The problem is also intermittent so the code will clear by itself, and come back. He's experiencing the same problem that I am experiencing, only mine is reporting left rear sensor, his is left front.

    I'm in the same boat as you RSick. My next route is a rebuilt ABS control module.

    Bump for all of us... Shop just made sure all my wires were intact and in fact connected. They cleaned the area as well. I was also told it was my abs sensor that is bad but the brake switch problem seems to be an issue with a lot of folks as well. So, it could either me the ABS sensor itself, the brake switch or the ABS module? What else could be causing these issues? This my code:
    Address 03: ABS Brakes
    * *Controller: 8E0 614 517 A
    * *Component: ABS/ESP allrad * * *1726
    * *Coding: 04497
    * *Shop #: WSC 06435
    3 Faults Found:
    00283 - Front Left ABS Wheel Speed Sensor (G47)
    * * * * * * 30-10 - Open or Short to B+ - Intermittent
    01119 - Gear Recognition Signal
    * * * * * * 35-10 - - - Intermittent
    01826 - Sensor for Steering Angle (G85): Supply Voltage Terminal 30
    * * * * * * 35-10 - - - Intermittent

    Anyway, seems to be happening/ has happened to many people on this forum and when the issue is fixed it is usually one or a combo of the above mentioned parts being replaced or a wire not touching the sensor correctly or being pushed too far in or just plain dirty..... Lastly, its a bummer seeing your dashboard lit up like that it is unsafe if the ABS isn't working properly. Sorry about the thread-jack-rant just had to go off. I feel your pain. Im upset just typing this out....

    ABS and ESP light on (after replacing sensor)

    Sidespar "Matt" fixed my ABS sensor almost 2 years ago and has been flawless since. I was pulling the exact same codes and tried changing the front L ABS sensor without success. I sent the sensor off to Matt and in under I week I was back in business. The bonus side is you don't have to get your module recoded if you repair instead of replace your original. I drove the car the entire time the module was out without an issue. As soon as it showed up on my doorstep I installed it and the lights went off and have remained that way. :)

    UPDATE:

    Ok, so I decided to remove the new aftermarket sensor, and popped back the old original sensor...NO more ABS and ESP lights!! Drove it around town for about 20 miles and everything was in working order. I'm guessing the ABS module has malfunctioned and the original sensor was ok to begin with. Also, the new rebuilt module probably was not programmed to read the new sensor, therefore signalling a failure. The ABS module needed to be repaired for it to read the original sensor and to function like it's suppose to do. I hope and pray that the problem is actually fixed and that this issue will not come back again... I'll keep everyone posted should the issue return...

    Feeww I just got my module back from k0mpresed today and it solved my ABS ESP problems. After replacing both brake sensor and the front drivers speed sensor I am very glad that I got resolved for $50 < 1.9k Dealer price. Also this can be done following the DIY k0mpresed posted earlier this week. Stoked to have those annoying lights gone!!!

    Re: ABS and ESP light on (after replacing sensor)

    I have a ? On this. On my A6 when i got it these lights were on and the drivers rear caliper would stick so i cleaned it and replaced the brake switch, rear sensors and rings and i get these lights intermittently, some times stay on constantly some times not. Cruise still works properly 600+ miles. My brakes will lock up some times though when stomping on them. All this lead to the Module or another sensor? Thanks

    Big to k0mpresed!!

    And to VectorG after using the cruise control one of the times the module was "intermittently" working...I used the cruise control as I was getting off the highway went for the brakes and nothing. I almost shit a brick. Luckily I was able to slow down enough with ebrake until the brakes came back but needless to say I haven't even thought of using cruise control since...but maybe now
