    tire pressure for daily driving?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I checked my tire pressure a couple of days ago and all four were just below 35 PSI. I have the OEM 19's with the Conticontact 3 tires. The tag on th B pillars indicates 41 PSI cold. The manual shows a range and also shows a couple pounds less in the rears than in the fronts. I pushed all four to 41 PSI and seems to handle well with a bit more firmness in the ride.

I do not plan on tracking car. Mostly city traffic and freeway driving in Los Angeles.

    What are folks here running?

    Thanks for replys.

I was running 38 all around on my 19 with the Pirellie PZero Rossa tires that came on the car and after 15k miles like that, the centers are totally worn on the tires from over inflation. Make sure to keep an eye out for that.

I am running what's printed on the door jamb, and that's what you should too. Audi doesn't arbitrarily spec an inflation. I see no reason to change it unless you are heavily loading the car.

Aren't those pressures based on a fully loaded car?

The door pillar is pressure for full loading (for liability reasons). At high speed, underinflated tires can can excessive heat.

When I recieved my car from the dealer, it had 41lbs all around and was very bouncy on the 101 freeway, near Rector Audi. Putting it at the recomened standard pressue, the car was less bouncy.

The standard loading recommened cold tire pressue is in the S4 manual, which is what I run.

I always was told follow the sticker on the car. My owners manual even references the sticker as the final word. The 41 does seem a bit high. I wonder why the rear pressure is lower. Must be to minimize understeer associated with all wheel drive. 33 on the rear seems low. Think I will go to 38 front and 35 rear for a while and see how it feels.

I don't think 41 is high. These are heavy cars.

Again, go with what's on the sticker/manual. Why playing guessing games?

I think the question here is which of those to follow. Sticker says 41. Manual full loaded say 41....Manual at standard load says 36/33

The answer is follow the manual, for light loading (three people or less), use the lower pressures.

One can use the max loading air pressures, with a light load, if it makes you happy, but the ride is not so good with higher pressure.

The higher pressue is usefull when loaded heavily or driving at high speed (90mph or more) for extended periods of time (multiple hours).

I run 38 psi all around. Best compromise for comfort/handling to me, and no uneven wear...

Funny story. I had a low tire one day at work. So I stopped at the gas station and pumped it up but did not have a gauge in my car. (I have one now) The one at the gas station was broken. So i drove home and stopped at a gas station close to home.

I get on the highway on my way to the second station and i feel unstable and the car feels like its ready to just lose it so im going like 40 miles a hour max.

When I Check the psi it was 59.

    Lesson: Dont do that again.

I just held it on there for like 20 seconds, wont do that again. lol

Oddly enough, tire still looked low.

I used to be @41 based on the door sticker. I now run 38 all around per the suggestion of a tech at my Audi dealer. It feels great and after 12K miles of that I have very nice even treadwear.

I lowered mine slightly today to what the manual says (36/33). I'm not sure if it's in my head, but I noticed that the steering and handling felt much tighter and better, especially in auto mode.

That's only what it says in the manual for the all season tires on the B8.5.

its definitely not just a mind game. Front pressure will have a huge difference on steering feel and there's many other factors to consider. The debate can rage on of which to use (door or manual) but I think its biased on what the load is. If you plan to drive a very long time and have 4 adults and a packed trunk, you'd be better off to run higher PSI and if DD you're pretty much alone, anything between and around 36/38 front and 33/35 rear is what I found to be best.

Funny enough right now I run 35 all around but I'll adjust i the next few days to 36 front and 34 back. I generally drive with a light load around anyways and your driving habits should also warrant how you like things. Higher pressure will make for easier steering even to the point of feeling loose in any settings and lower pressure will go the other way.

It boils down to what you like to feel on the steering within the recommendations with the user manual/door settings.
