Exclamation WARNING: Never use Meguiar brand "Brake Dust Barrier"

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I am aware of "Wheel Wax" brand wheel protectant that I should have bought, but I just saw this at a local auto parts store and picked it up. Meguiar brand "Brake Dust Barrier" is absolute garbage. I followed the directions on the bottle, but wow. I left as is for three days just to see what would happen. It in fact made it MORE difficult to remove the brake dust. And it left a milky white residue all over my wheels

I just spent two hours un-fucking my wheels with other chemicals and hard scrubbing to remove this garbage. Just a warning for others I guess.

ironically, most turtle wax products happen to be garbage while most meguairs products are considered quality stuff (i guess with the exception of their 'brake dust barrier')

never let me down. i really only use the spray wax and wheel cleaner. i actually used fiberglass sailboat polish and wax on my wheels when i finished painting them. its been almost 2 months and just now am i starting to notice the brake dust sticking to the wheels. previously all it would take is a rag to wipe them clean.

give meguiar;s tech wax a shot, that has been the only wax i have ever used where i saw a difference between the old wax i was using (meguiar's gold) and the new wax, now i use it on every car

Get some Zaino polish if you want to see a difference, of course claybar and or cleaner wax first.

Armorall wheel protectant does a great job for me. I hate Armorall since the cleaning wipes destroyed my steering wheel but this thing shows results and it's actual good stuff. There's a few nice reviews on YouTube.

Probably has to do with the lack of prep or misuse. That stuff works very well.

So by taking my wheels off washing and letting them dry and after that spraying them, is a bad thing?

You don't need to take your wheel off. You should really use a good brake dust cleaner before, like Sonax or Royal Brown. The first it more expensive but it's suppose to be just a bit better, not much though, they're both great products. And make sure you follow the directions strictly, spray the armorall wheel protectant really good and let it sit for at least an hour, I usually do it at night so it can sit and dry over night. IT REALLY WORKS.

I've been using a combination of Supernatural Wheel Cleaner and Supernatural Hybrid wax on my wheels with great results. Once the sealant/wax is applied, brake dust washes off easily with the cleaner and a soft brush. I reapply the wax every 3 months.

Thanks for the warning, I had that same can in my hand the other day and decided not to buy it for whatever reason. I was going to return and get it, but fortunately you made this topic before I could do so

Not really sure why it doesn't work on your wheels then. Are you spraying too much possibly or not allowing the product to set long enough before driving?

Sorry to hear about the results - definitely a problem there, as this stuff is pretty good. The residue you describe makes me wonder if there was some separation of the ingredients.

Total FWIW....I still rely on Poorboy's wheel sealant. For the "relatively inexpensive + ease of use" segment of the market, I've found it to be the best product out there. There are some others on the market that are more expensive (I'm dying to try the 22LE stuff), but the bottom line for any of these products is that realistic expectations are key. Without a devoted regimen, heat, brake dust, and general road grime will always win.
