Question Brake pads rattle up front

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Anybody ever had this before? The outer ones are fine and are glued with the sillicone compound onto the caliper so I am guessing it is the inner ones. They rattle over harsh surfaces and are silent if brakes are applied. Also the one on the left makes a clunk under braking just before stopping completely as though it shifts... I never had this issue before on my other cars because normally the pads have just nowhere to go...

Mine does the exact same thing and it's really fucking annoying. To my understanding it's because the pad is not seated properly. I'm getting new front brakes soon and hoping this resolves the problem, but who knows.

Yeah, I made SS shims to fill the gap between the pad backing plate and the caliper. Worked perfect until the shims fell out. I have a B6 S4 front caliper and rotor set waiting on splash shields to install hopefully, the new setup won't rattle.

Make sure you've properly bedded in the brake pads. That will help a lot. I had new track pads put in and bedded. Still had some rattle to them, but it went away after track use (heavy braking). After that, no rattle issues. I've switched back to street pads and have to deal with the rattle again. Guess some spirited driving is in order....

For brake pad bedding, I found this to be an excellent resource: http://www.stoptech.com/technical-su...and-procedures

The FNR calipers aren't immune to rattling/clunking unfortunately. Theres a LOOONG thread in the B7 section about issues with the anti-rattle clips and clunking coming from the brake pads on decel. Its really hit-or miss, and clearly not everyone experienced it, but nobody has yet found a 100% solution to it. Some people have solved it by bending the anti-rattle clips to put more tension on the pads, but thats not 100%

My stock 1.8 calipers and pad combination rattled, switched to oem S4 calipers and pads (and rotors, obviously) and don't have the issue any longer.

Wow, I just fixed this yesterday on my B5. Super annoying rattle from the front pads. Everybody says "it's the clips!", but it's not. The rattle has persisted through 2 different sets of used pads, different retaining clips, different caliper brackets and rotors (A8/TT upgrade). Yesterday I finally installed brand new Akebono Premium Ceramic pads (tired of the brake dust from my old pads). These pads came with new shims on the back. I put them on using some red pad "goo" on the outside pad. So far I've taken it over some seriously bumpy roads that always caused the rattle before. Not a peep from them now.

I'm hoping that they don't start jangling again once the pads get thinner. But I think that may be what happens.

How old are your pads? Could be an issue with the caliper as well, I would definitely have them inspected.

    This stuff>

Coat both inner and outer pads. On the outer pad I just coat the portion of the pad that contacts the caliper. Don't worry about it looking sloppy. after it cures you can pick off any excess showing on the outer pad. This stuff works. Period.

Thanks for all the good replies folks, I guess this issue is quite common. The pads are quite old but have over 50% left on them as I do only highway. I'm gonna try to "goo" them up or something.
