    RNS-E Navigation DVD

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I bought my b7 S4 yesterday and am loving every minute of it! However, it still has the older navigation dvd and I was wondering if anyone has the 2010-2011 version. I did search the forum, but all the threads regarding the updated navi dvd were pretty old. Thanks in advance! And I'm happy to finally be a part of the family

there are various torrent sites which carry the '10-'11 version of the cd, pm me if you have trouble finding one
you will need a dvd burner with a burnable dual layer dvd ( more expensive than your avg dvd)
when using your dvd burning software look for an option that indicates DVD-ROM for book type, and select it

burn the disk, insert into RNS-E, firmware will update, and then your good to go

Does that work with only RNS-E? I've got the B6 in-DIS nav, and it's horribly outdated (circa 2005). My office is "off road" lol. I'd like to get an RNS-E to replace the Symph-II one day, but for now, I'd like to update the maps in my existing nav.

Anyone with DIS nav know if the above mentioned files work, or if there is a different way to update?

If it wasn't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all...

Don't forget to use Verbatim DVDs. Personally, it's the only brand that has worked for me. Lesser brands don't really work so well.

i doubt that would work and i wouldn't try it as you run the risk of bricking you current unit
the reason being the firmware update that comes with the maps, its specific to the rns-e

maps, routes, and a firmware update. there are some downsides to doing the firmware update that should be mentioned, for example if you run video through your rns-e via a modified firmware, doing the map update and firmware update will remove those features

I recently purchased a B7 S4 with factory RNS-E (HW70) that has an older map DVD and would like to upgrade to whatever the latest/best software and maps there are available.

Do the latest maps still work with the old hardware? If not, what is the last year that will work?

I see the latest software version seems to be 260 -- is that what I should upgrade to? Do I burn that to a DVD or CD? Does it matter?

I'm reading that Verbatim DVD's recommended over "lesser brands". I don't have any on hand, but I do have Sony dual-layer... will those work or should I go get some Verbatim dual-layer discs?

yes the 2011 maps work fine wit the rns-e, which is the firmware version 260. you have to burn it to a dual layer dvd, a cd will not work as our navigation is all dvd based.
if you have a sony dual layer give it a try. make sure with whatever software you use you go into the options under book type and select DVD-ROM
the worst that could happen is your sony dvd is a puck, you can always revert back to previous maps by installing your original dvd

OK, here's what I've discovered: The Sony dual-layer DVD's with a LG blu-ray writer and Nero will make a disc that RNS-E will accept. Previously I was not using Nero, just Windows 7's simple built-in burning app. When I used Nero and told it to close the disc, that's what made the difference.

However, even though it ran the "updating software" from the DVD and it seems to be the newer version (no legal disclaimer, and pushing power mutes the radio instead of turning off the unit), the info screen shows the software version is "X" instead of 260. Do I need to burn the 260 version to a CD instead of a DVD and load the new version from there?

Are you burning a .iso image?
In the main directory, what does the INDEX.TXT file say? Does it start with: "SOFIDX:0260" ?

If it does, I'm not sure what to tell you. Maybe try using ImgBurn instead of Nero.

    Yeah I burned an .iso.

Funny you mention the INDEX.TXT -- I went and found a separate 260 upgrade "sw260.rar" that someone linked to on an Audi forum, and I looked at the INDEX.TXT in it, and I found this:
    SOFIDX:0260
    NAVVER:V2220317
    AUDVER:A2220141

Then I looked at the same file in the 2010-2011 DVD .iso, and I found this:
    SOFIDX:0260NAVVER:V2220317AUDVER:A2220141

Or at least that's the way it looks in Notepad. The contents are the same, but the .iso version has it all on the same line.

Regardless, the Nav system is not bricked -- it seems to be running 260 even if it doesn't know it.

Yes that is correct, it is running 260. My version on screen also just gives the X.
Congrats on the sucessful upgrade to the new maps.

For the RNS-D and BNS4 (as you have) you need Bosch Travelpilot DX maps, in Europe you can get these from Teleatlas, but I'm not sure where you can get them from in the US - sorry!
