Headliner repair - which glue to fix sag?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I need to repair my headliner as its sagging so much it's rubbing against my head!

Will take out it to make job easier and clean off all the old orange foam. I bought some high temp resistance headliner spray. The spray is web like so it will leave small gaps on cloth. Wondering if this is the best way to get max hold or apply some high temp glue by spreading it across complete area?

Anyone done this repair yet and have tips for best glue and method to apply?

    Many thanks!

Try heating up the area with a clothing steamer (if u have access to one), if not try a hair dryer and a super light spray of water. Idea is to heat up the glue that's in the headliner foam and tighten the material. Then use a soft paint roller to smooth out/re-attach the material. Will need to finesse it a bit.

    Good luck!

I need to attempt this as well, and we do have a good clothes steamer (that we've never used). My headliner is only sagging over the rear seats. I was hoping to not have to actually remove the headliner from the car to do the repair, can the steamer and soft paint roller method be used in the car as installed rather then removing the headliner and doing it on a bench?

my rear headliner is sagging and has actually came loose around the rear light, so for now I've bought some clear tacks that spin in to hold it up. I'm debating on doing a full s4 black headliner and pillars install, or just remove it and lay down new fabric. I'm stuck in a debate on if I wanna take my usp to show level or just continue to have a clean DD and wait to buy a newer model Audi. I kinda wanna save the B6 and make it show worthy.... I see so many clean B6's in the picture thread that it makes me wanna go crazy buying coilovers or bags, wheels, wrap the body, bumpers etc...

Well I can tell you, my original headliner is sagging across both rear seats and it only got worse by touching it and trying to spray some 3M glue in behind. If you're not careful the glue can even seep through the cloth.

I did get a good tight replacement headliner which I have not yet installed. However, I messed up when trying to clean some stain marks on it with an upholstery cleaner as now the passenger side came loose a little in the concave area above the head.

I'm going to try to fix it again with some heat and gentle sustained pressure. The headliner is stretched over the upward curve and is difficult to keep in contact with the inward bulging shape.

I would not try to do this in the car as gravity works against you, unless of course your car is flipped on its roof.

And if your car was flipped on its roof, the headliner wouldn't be sagging anymore. It's practically win win.

I think our headliners are too light colored for any glue fix. One guy on youtube affixed a syringe to an aerosol tip to inject new adhesive, but warned that it shows stains on light colors.
Best fix is to pull it out and redo it with Alcantara or something cheaper. Then I can finally have true all-black interior.

Based on this video it seems just like every other headliner I have seen where the fabric has seperated from foam. On other cars my experience was once the foam is coming apart it's hard to reglue it well enough to have a fix that lasts, better of getting a new piece of material. I sourced mine from a local upholstery shop, I used 3M adhesive (my Dodge Raider) and it held up for 12 years. At 13 years it's doing the same thing the oem stuff did at the same age.

I've wanted to do my headliner since its starting to sag with some grey suede, but it looks like a bitch to remove. This kid had that liner out in no time. Maybe its because he doesn't have a sunroof (which my car does) and it requires a bunch more steps.
