    why did audi go with the word 'avant' for their wagons?

    I actually read your thread incorrectly.....you asked why they chose it, not what it meant. Why is anyone's guess, really. I often wonder why other car manufacturers choose names for their vehicles and the meaning/story behind the name.

    Avant means forward, I think, so I´m guessing they found it suitable in some way… Vorsprung durch technik/Advancement through technology, advancement = forward?

    plausible... i always assumed it was short for avant garde. when my father asked me why it was an avant it made me wonder. having been within the audi family for some time i never even bothered to ask or find out until now.

    Avant garde means a group that applies the latest technologies and state of the art concepts. I'm sure the reasoning had something to do with that.

    touring is a better option as well... i contacted aoa they did not have an answer for me and the guy on the phone was stumped and said 'i never thought to ask.' they are going to inquire and get back to me IF they find an answer.
