suspension clunk noise after doing coilovers and all new control arms

Hey everyone I am stumped as to what is causing a clunk when my car goes over reflectors or other mediocre bumps in the road. The car feels solid and I cannot find anything loose. I have a little bit of noise when I rattle my steering wheel back and forth. But the noise seems more related to my shocks or something.

I recently put koni coilovers in and did adjustable control arms. I also replaced the remaining control arms. The car handles speed and bumps fine but it makes me nervous cause it sounds like something is loose. Any ideas what I should check?

Did you forget to reuse your washers on the upper shock mounts they will cause a clunk on little bumps and suck as the shock piston is wearing the metal in the mounts into an oval and clunking back and forth

Any idea what size crows foot i need to tighten those? I redid those too and had to use a cresent wrench. It was pretty ackward. its possible they are loose, but i checked them not long ago and they were fine. When i changed them i did both the inner and outer.

Can you elaborate on what this washer is? I have a similar type clunk but I'm running Stasis Ohlins so I'm not sure if I have that washer or if the Stasis stuff completely gets rid of it. But, I'm not sure what this washer you refer to is to even go look around. Thanks.

So when i did the coil overs, the old shock tower mounts were stripped. I got new shock tower mounts from an B5 A4. I have the washers inbetween the bolt and the shock tower. I put everything back like it came apart. but the washer issue description sounds pretty valid actually. maybe i was missing them from before i got the car...

There should be a brass colored washer that goes UNDER the top shock bushing. The order would be bumpstop, top round plate, washer, rubber bushing, then nut.

So when i got the coil overs they are already assembled. These pieces you speak of were already in their "proper" place. I assume. I do not look forward to having to pull all that stuff just to see if there is a washer in there. It seems like this is probably my problem though. Ill have to get another alignment if any of the measurements change :(

I am hoping one my tie rod ends is loose but i cannot confirm it yet.

If you didn't replace your upper strut mounts that would be your problem.

RolledmySTi is most likely right; clunking typically comes from the strut mounts, and from your description, it sounds like there's a good chance they were not fully or properly tightened. It can be quite difficult as the shaft usually does not have a wrench flat on it, requiring an allen wrench to be stuck through the socket. Or, you can use an airgun if you are very safe, but don't spin the shaft on accident.

We have our own stiffer-then-stock strut mounts as well : http://www.034motorsport.com/chassis...8-p-18318.html

Your setup woild still use it it goues upper shock mount on top hat with shock piston in between it before ypu put the bolt on the threaded part of the shock piston a little copper colered washer goes on if you dont have that washer it will cause a clunk because the piston is free floatin in the shock mount and hardened chrome is harder than tje metal in the upper shock mount so it were it fron a perfect circle into an oval and clunk hard very distinct you will uave to tear down your whole front suspension to see if you have the washer or any damage ..... found that out the hard way when you do a coilover install fron 9pm to 3 am so you can make it to work lol
