    Oil extractor oil change question

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    All,

If you change oil with an extractor and have to do so on an incline, is it better for our cars to be tilted towards the front or rear on that incline?

Any technical reasoning due to mounting of engine in B8s? Failing that, interested in majority of opinions. Thanks!

I guess it would just depend on how the tube reaches into the oil pan. I would think the front tilted more would make sense since the oil flows in that direction from engine to oil pan, and then you can stick the tube towards the back end of the oil pan as well. But I'd imagine it would be just as fine on a flat level if you can just get the tube all the way at the lowest point.

Thanks. Was going for lowest point in pan just wasn't sure if drain flow path to oil pan was more ideal biased forward or rear. Appreciate the response.

I just received my oil extractor since our cars tend to have problems with the drain bolts. I won't need to do one for another 4k miles, but let me know how that goes.

Well, decided to go tilted towards the rear of the car since if it were a level surface one would be up on ramps. According to level markings on my Motive, I got 7 quarts out. A little hard to believe but, given my dealers statement to "stop by for free top offs" (apparently they weren't sure if 2012s eliminated the oil consumption issues), I guess they would have added extra (last change was my 5K service). No way it's 2 quarts off, so confident that majority of oil was removed.

That sounds strange..7 qt's would be serious overfill on 4.9 capacity. Surprised it didn't trigger an overfill warning. Are you sure about the level markings? Also, did the Motive unit work as expected? I don't really mind getting under the car but I may buy one for the added convenience.

I believe it has to be high. Motive markings are on as received by ECS. It is a sticker, so could have been misapplied at factory. So, could be (and likely is) off...did not have ready means to take other measurements. I was just saying that I don't think it would be over two quarts off, so likely pulled most oil out.

The Motive worked great! Drove around the block, waited 20min, and started. Pumped to not more than 15" of vacuum as directed (gage goes to 30") and had to pump back to 10" once at around the 4qt marks simply because flow slowed and I wanted to keep pace. Dumped at local Autozone and I'm good to go. MMI shows full (those dipsticks were back ordered when I bought my Motive). Time will tell (since a variety of extractor units - Motive or not - seem to degrade quickly from reviews across the web) but overall satisfied with purchase after first use.

If it has to be tilted I would tilt towards the front (car facing down the hill) as the extractor extracts through the dipstick opening which is toward the front of the engine. The oil pan plug is in the back because the car is usually up on ramps when you change the oil the normal way.

With an extractor where do you pull the oil out through? Dipstick?

yes thats the only spot, the car doesnt come with a dipstick but you'll see the dipstick tube right near the oil filter, it's just closed by a cap, just stick the extractor's tube in through there all the way down to the oil pan.

I did my first change last week and had a K&N filter, listed for '09. Turns out it was for the previous model year. I didn't know any better and was stuck with an old filter and a car with no oil in it, so the old filter went back on. Now I have the right filter but I don't really want to drain all that week old oil. Would the filter be full after the car has sat and cooled? This is my first car with a filter mounted top side.

Some oil will remain in the filter, I'd install the new filter and add about 1/4qt of fresh oil. After you get an oil level reading add more oil, if needed.

Checking the level shouldn't be a problem, got a dipstick the same time. I'm just hoping to make minimal mess. Well, I'll get some rags out and crack her open tonight.

There aren't many that are pneumatic. Almost all have a pump handle like a bicycle pump and that's how you pump it to vacuum. Car holds 4.9qts so go with one that is at least 6qts to be on the safe side. I recently got a Mityvac off Amazon and it works great.

    7qt really is a lot.
I still like the old fashioned way. About 5 came out and 5 went in. Even with only 5k miles on the oil, oil is way to dark and way too thick

Don't overthink it. This is supposed to be easier than doing it the traditional way.

Level ground, warm engine, feed the tube in and let it suck all the oil out.
Move the tube in/out a bit to grab oil when it's almost done.

7qts of oil is too much. With DI motors potentially having buildup issues, you don't need to add sludge from overfilling.
    Fill to the recommended capacity.

If you change the oil without changing the filter, just loosen the filter a tad.
Filter has anti-drain back valve and just cracking it to release pressure will allow the rest of the oil in the head to drain.
Tighten up and fill with oil- get a new filter when you want.
    Run engine, check for leaks
stop, check level (with a dipstick)
    top if necessary.

I have used a German PELLA extractor for many years. It's simple and quality unit, 8qt capacity.

    Get a dipstick!
I harp about that because it's just stupid to not have it.
There are some great threads with part numbers here.
