How to I program a new key fob without having an old fob, and just 1 key??

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Ok AZ my 03 b6 a4 only came with a standard key(only starts car and unlocks/locks doors) I would like to purchase a used key wireless fob

    HTML Code:
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/AUDI-FLIP-KEY-KEYLESS-ENTRY-REMOTE-TRANSMITTER-FOB-OEM-KEY-S4-A4-QUATTRO-/310406362764?fits=Make:Audi|Model:A4|Year:2003&hash=item4845a9368c&item=310406362764&pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr
And use it to unlock/lock the doors(wireless) All of the guides ive seen on here say you need 2 keys, surely there is a way to do it with just 1 standard key.

    also, I don't have access to VAG-COM.

what steps do I need to take? and are all 03 audi a4/a6 transmitters compatible with eachothers?

    Thanks!!

no theyre model specific... if you open the fob theres tiny little writing inside that says model and year... i went to the dealer and the concierge did it for me in a couple seconds... the used car dealer gave me a A6 key fob and even vagcom want gonna make it work. he programed it with one key. put it in the lock and locked the door with the key and then held the lock button on the fob for a sec then a chirp... then hit unlock. something like that its pretty easy if you have the right fob. dealer didnt charge me to do it.

I think getting the key fob programmed to lock/unlock doors is the easy part - my understanding is that the dealer needs to het involved to deal with the engine immobilizer coding.

Some info here http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/cars/key-matching.html. Your model year is 2003 so you might be OK.

    ^ I dont have vag-com..

To program the remote functions on a new key, get in your car with the car off and the driver side window rolled down.

insert the new key into the ignition

insert your vallet key in the driver side door lock (outside the car)

turn the vallet key towards lock and hold it there

while it is held towards lock, press the unlock button on your new remote for
    2 seconds.

    let go

press it again for 2 seconds

let go and you should hear an alarm honk or something like that.

there should be something close to this i can do with just 1 key..

like i said the dealer did the "FOB" with only one key... nothing in the ignition. he didnt even get in my car.
that is to program the fob... to actally get a new key, have it cut and start the car you HAVE to goto the dealer.
and like i said dont go Egay style... no one will cut the blank and without the dealer even if you get it cut it will start and then die because of the immobilizer.

like i said the dealer isnt too bad... under $100 and youll have a key and fob that works

My key has been deprogrammed a few times already. All I do is put the key in the ignition, turn it to "ON", then hit "lock" on the door and the key at the same time about 3 times. Repeat for "unlock". After that I remove the key and test it. Always works for me even though I've never seen it suggested in any DIY before.

You don't always have to go to the dealer for a new cut key and imo program. Call a few locksmiths in the area. I had a guy come out and do mine when I didn't even have a key for my car. He made a few for me and programmed them for the system. Was much cheaper than paying a tow to the dealer since I didn't have a key. Should be around $70 or less for a key.

I tried to program a new second fob for my '02 A6 Avant. I followed the instructions I found online, but it didn't appear to work. A couple of days later wanted to take the Avant out for some errands. I unlocked the car with my one working fob which came with the car, got in, and started the car just fine - The key icon on the instrument cluster came on and went off in the normal fashion on starting. I put my foot on the brake, I heard the shift interlock click normally and I tried to shift into DRIVE. No go. The shifter would go into reverse and actually move, and into neutral, and even moved over laterally into the sport mode but no car movement), BUT would not slip back into actual Drive and engage a forward gear in either mode.
My Question is: Is this a coincidental shift linkage issue, or is this the immobilizer locking out the forward gears?

The immobilizer system kills the engine. It doesn't lock anything out mechanically.

Thanks for the quick reply Old Guy. Is there anything I did with a failed fob coding that could normally result in the shifter or transmission being locked in this way?

Saw this old thread and thought I'd chime in. I accidentally broke the transponder immobilizer chip in my key fob (02 A4) when fitting a new shell.
The dealer wanted $150 for one key so I went online and spent $20 for two new blank keys + keyfob (with immobilizer chip inside) and $100 for a OBDStar VagPro key programmer

My original cut key was still good so used that to fit into the new fob/chip. Used Vagpro, key in ignition position 2 (don't start), select immobilizer function, read security code from ECU, selected program key, followed prompts and now have a new immobilizer chip programmed. For the cost the dealer wanted I can now program keys in the future and wont have to go to them. The locksmith charges me $25 to cut a double sided key. To program the KeyFob remote you just follow the procedure of one key in ignition and other key in door, etc...

Also you can buy a new immobilizer chip to fit inside a keyfob online for $2-3 (looks like a small capsule). I believe the P/N is ID44 or something like that. Once a immobilizer chip is programmed you can't erase and program again.

Absolutely right. In your key fob if you open it up, and I mean the fob itself and not just the battery cover, there is your circuit board for the lock, unlock, trunk and panic buttons along with the led red light that blinks when you push the button. If you were to pop that board out of the fob, right underneath the led light is hidden underneath a piece of rubber or even encased with plastic is the circuit for the immobilizer. The whole hold the unlock button while you turn the key to run for 10 seconds then let off the button and turn key back does not program the fob for the immobilizer!

I went through this in 2015 myself. They are RFID (ID48) transponders. They look like tiny glass pills. I bought some new fob shells off of Amazon at the time to swap the remote circuit boards into, but they didn't come with the transponders. I found a pack of 6 transponders on Ebay for like $15. I also bought a programmer on Ebay from China for like $150. You can put one transponder into the fob shell and program your immobilizer to recognize them. If you don't want to transfer the key from your old remote, you'll also need to find a locksmith to do that. Last one I had cut was $40 in Dallas.
