    2002 A4 1.8T Reverse Problem (video)

    I have a 2002 Audi A4 Quattro 1.8T Automatic.

I'm going to be very honest about what happened and hope not to get flamed, because you know at heart you like to have fun sometimes too.

My friend got ahold of a super high fps camera, and we were testing it on stuff, and I got the great idea to test it on my Audi "sliding" (we've all seen the slow motion drift videos, they're awesome). So anyways, I approached the camera, and pulled the e-brake, and powered all the way through the turn. I did an awesome slide, it was perfect for the video.

Then I drove home and everything was normal (or so I thought). About an hour after that, I went to my friends house because the video was done. I put it into reverse, and it shifted into it harder than usual. It tried pulling back for about a second or two, and then seemed like it slipped into neutral. But it I rev it to like 4-5k rpms, it will start to roll backwards, almost like a slipping clutch. So it only engages for a couple of seconds, and then disengages. It's the same time every time. Here's a video of what I'm talking about.

I tried looking up any fixes online, but I couldn't quite find anyone with the same problems as me. I've seen some people who's electric gear selector is broken, and things like that, but this doesn't seem like that. All other gears work perfectly.

    Thanks in advance!

Reverse drum is probably broke. Time for a rebuild. Did you go hard on the reverse?

No, I never touched reverse. And now after thinking about it, right after I did the turn, I went into reverse to go pick up my friend and it was working fine... So it must have happened on the way to my house or something.

And really? A transmission rebuild? What would happen if I kept using reverse, just revved it high? Would it end up letting go completely? And why does it engage fine for the first second or two?

    Thanks for the help.

Just an update, I went out and tried the car today, and now when you shift it into reverse it going into gear for a few seconds, slips out, and then grabs again. But I have full reverse now I suppose. I just have to wait for it to go through it's cycle. I wonder what this could be.
