Bying used 2007 Q7, what should I lookout for

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
New here and new to Audi. I'm looking to buy a 2007 Q7 (4.2) and was wondering what I should look out for.

    1. Are there any particular issues I should look out?
    2. Any special tests or inspections I should do?
    3. I have VCDS, anything special I should read or monitor while test driving?

Any help would be much appreciated, wife is worried about buying a used car, and in particular the 2007 Q7 after having read Consumer Reports rating on it.

    the letter U...

I'd check the brake pads and rotors, they go quick on the Q7. Also the battery

I highly recommend them. We bought ours used with 40K miles and now have about 95K miles on it now. We are going to trade in our 2007 Q7 for a 2012 TDI soon, only reason for that is our son plays travel baseball and we are driving everywhere and I am going to use it for work, assuming it gets 30mpg on the highway.
We had many issues with the v6 but got the v8 and its been perfect. Only changed the brake pads once so don't worry about that much. The car is going in on Monday b/c the hatch has stopped closing all the way, I think one of my 3 kids did something, personally. Driver seat has one bolster area cracking due to wear but everything else has been flawless.
We just had the battery changed which was costly.
My wife just tried to get me to consider a BMW X5 diesel but my comment was "why leave the Q7 when its been so good to us?" She agreed but would like a different style and is bored that the 2007 looks almost the same as the 2012.
Good luck, if you were closer I would give you a firesale of a Q7 deal.
3m clear everywhere, completely debadged, tenntech rear spoiler, tint, window spoiler, APR stage 1+, APR IC, APR inlet with tube, APR Springs, homemade intake, unibrace, milltek 2nd-ary Cat Deletes. E85 right now. BC Forged wheels, whaletail, V8Bait lights....Splitter group buy and lwt battery on its way

Two things that are both fixable:
    1) a/c drain can clog, causing water in the footwell - relatively easy to fix yourself if you are so inclined
    2) particularly on early VINs (30000 and below), moon roof drainage can leak, many were fixed under warranty, and you can check footwells, spare tire well, and fuse box for water intrusion

Beyond that the cars are quite good. These issues are quite minor compared to the mechanical issues early VW or Porsche cars on a similar platform had. The 4.2 is quite good too. Most people's biggest complaint is spilling coffee on the MMI. Mechanically, these cars do very well. I personally am a big fan of the air suspension, which is far more reliable than the one the Allroads had, and the wife is a fan too for the ride quality and ease of loading.

If anyone in the Bay Area is looking to get one, I can tell you the lowdown on local inventory via PM.

My wife just tried to get me to consider a BMW X5 diesel but my comment was "why leave the Q7 when its been so good to us?" She agreed but would like a different style and is bored that the 2007 looks almost the same as the 2012.

Good choice on not going with the X5. Talk about boring and boring looking. I beg to differ regarding your wife's comment on how she is bored that the 2007 looks almost the same as the 2012. I don't think so one bit. I loved when this vehicle came out as a prototype and they called it a "Pikes Peak" but when I bought my 3.0 TDI in December 2009 (It's a 2010 model, the first with LED lights) for 70K (Just paid it off in 2012) ... the reason I bought it was because of the updated body. From 2010 on >>> the bubble looking rear tail lid is gone (this was UGLY) , it is cut and has way better curves than the <<<2009 and under as well as rear LED lights/brake lights/ and dual integrated rear fog lamps, as well as the front bumpers, grill, Projector headlights, LED daytime running lights that surround the headlight case, and even the rocker panels /side skirts are different. So the 2012 does NOT look like the 2007 at all. In fact everytime I see an older one, I say to myself: "I'm so glad I didn't rush in and get one of the earlier models." The clean burning diesel TDI are an advance and "Green" car and still provide way more torque than any other Q7 (Unless you have a V12 from Europe) It's not quick off the line, but it isn't the reason you buy a 6000 lb vehicle anyway. (That's what an S4 Stasis is for : 0-60 in 4.2 with 410 Supercharged horsepower) See my pics. ) Anyway, from 2010 on the MMI is way better than the MMI in the 2009 and under models. The Q7 TDI was once my RC 3D heli transport and now it's my toddler transporter. Yes you will get 25 MPG on the highway but not 30 (unless you're driving Miss Daisy.)
To answer the original post question: Is there anything to look out for: The 4.2s get crappy gas mileage and the MMI had lots of issues.

I had an X5 and it was terrible and always in the shop for radiator leaks, tranny, and minor things, I love the Q7 we bought a used 09 sline the thign was the seats was cracking but it was repaired under warranty, and we hear clicking noise when we place it park, not a big deal but annoying. I have heard notign but good things about things vehicles except the leaking but its more prone to 07 models and an easy fix. Good luck on your purchase,
